It’s all Linux - so what specifically are you trying to do?

openSUSE uses zypper not apt, have a look here: SDB:Zypper usage 11.3 - openSUSE
If you know nothing about Linux, you’re not going to learn more by starting with 2 distros. I’ll suggest you stick with one or the other and learn the basics (I’m not talking about apt-get and zypper) in order to be able to formulate questions clearly and understand the answers rather than asking “random questions” in the wrong forum.
To your question, you’ll find a comparison between package management here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman_Rosetta.
But better start with one distro! It takes more time to assimilate the (common) basics than to learn the differences between distros.

You’re not asking really for the terminal to be like the Ubuntu terminal,
then, you’re asking for openSUSE to become Ubuntu.
apt-get is a Debian package manager, not used in RPM-based
distributions. So for that, you’ll have to learn zypper or use the
openSUSE tools.
gedit should be essentially the same on both distros. It’s possible that
the packages were built with different options.
Asking to make openSUSE behave like Ubuntu is kinda like asking for Linux
to be like Windows…If you want a Ubuntu-like interface, then you
should use Ubuntu, just like if someone wants a Windows-like interface,
they should use Windows.

very cool link! (thanks!)…
i’m no zypper whiz [not even close] but it seems to me that there is a
surprisingly high number of n/a, IN PROGRESS or blanks in the openSUSE
column…prompting me to ask: is the openSUSE column up-too-date? (are
there really that many things done by pacman/apt/yum/etc which are not
available in zypper? or, maybe they don’t need to be??)

at least zypper in --download-only is missing in the list … and maybe a couple others.
DenverD is right, this list is kinda neat, but heavily outdated and / or incomplete. For example it suggests one has to edit /etc/zypp/locks to add / remove a package lock, while it can be done via
## add a lock
zypper al $package_name
## remove a lock
zypper rl $package_name
## view locks
zypper locks

i think it would be nice if a zypper guru with the time and talent went
over there and volunteered to help them get the zypper part of the list
updated…
well, i mean…we (the linux community) are seeking to collaborate more,
right?
[even if some think the whole point is Fedora vs Ubuntu vs Gentoo vs etc
etc etc…and, “market share” or DistroWatch “ranking”…]
hmmmmmm…maybe that page could be opened up some and be better
accommodated in Wikipedia…just a collaborative thought passing
through the synapses . . .

The page says it is based on one in the opensuse wiki. That page hasn’t
been updated for nearly two years.
So perhaps the first step would be to update the opensuse wiki. Then the
arch guys could update theirs.

GREAT point!
maybe someone knows a zypper guru who will do that?

Well that page refers to another page prepared by the team
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Zypper_usage#Cheat_sheet which is more
up-to-date but still doesn’t include to --download-only option that was
mentioned. But it does say that for more information, see the man page!
So maybe all that is needed is for somebody who has 11.4 and knows how
to read a manpage to update the various wiki pages?
seesh ppl cut me some slack, im new to opensuse and linux for that matter, if you could kindly direct me in the right direction to post beginner questions that would be helpful.

look at this page: http://forums.opensuse.org/
see the section “Get Technical Help Here”? that section has several
forums, as click on each you will find what each forum is for, like if
you click on Install/Boot/Login, right below the title of the forum is
“Questions about installation, login, boot issues, partitioning, file
systems, software that runs at boot (GRUB, LILO, boot scripts)”
so, to answer your question: beginner questions go in any of those “Get
Technical Help Here” forums
just do you best to pick the right place, and start a new thread with
a descriptive thread subject (like for this one it might be Where to ask
beginner questions?) and put ONE question in it…
sometimes the question you want to ask has already been asked, and
answered…so, look around some (imo its a good idea to google and the
site specifier, like
site:forums.opensuse.org [key words, phrases etc]
and, there are thousands of docs, manuals, how-tos etc etc etc…
but, ask…
