hi i am new at opensuse i don’t know anything about it i was using ubuntu before
so i found the software manager but it’s empty no apps are showing nothing except the weather for some reason i am not sure if there is something wrong with or what ? is it like ubuntu’s apps centre or is it something else ?
and what options do i have to install apps ?
i hope i am making sense and thank you
my system is opensuse 13.2
Here are a couple of guides to get you started
ok so i did the online update from yast and now i can see the apps but when i try to install an app it says the installation failed i tried different apps and the result is the same so what should i do >
At a loss on how you “tried” to install an app??? Exactly what error do you see?
Are you using Yast-Software management GUI, zypper command line, apper KDE installer, something else???
quit with the comic sans
#1 start yast go to repository management and remove the install medium (DVD or USB), next add a few of community repo’s packman for multimedia and nvidia or ati for video drivers (depending on your card)
#2 in yast go to software management and play with the options, the default is search which does not show anything unless you do a search for and a package is found, try the rpm groups … just play with yast’s options they’re pretty self explenatory.
#3 if you need some exotic app try a search here
https://software.opensuse.org
it indexes a lot of repositories.

You have to give exact details of the procedure you followed and the
exact error messages you got. We are not on your seat, we can’t see what
you do, so you have to be our eyes and tell us.
If you are unable to describe it, then take a video with a camera. Or
photos.

Careful. Better not till he learn the ropes: adding repositories wildly
is one of the best ways to destroy the system.

ok so this is the software app i was asking about
http://im56.gulfup.com/MV4sU6.png
in this case i want to install rhythmbox
http://im56.gulfup.com/9I8YPp.png
after few seconds this is the error i get
http://im56.gulfup.com/4brYWp.png
i tried few other apps other than rhythmbox but the result is the same
thank you for the response
That looks a lot like a Gnome app that you probably started as a regular user, you need root privileges to install packages, not sure how you do that under gnome, try right-clicking on the menu and see if there is a run as root option (the kde menu has that)
anyhow why not try yast for software management, it might not have pretty pictures but it’s extremely useful

or if you just want to install rhythmbox why not use zypper from a console
#sudo zypper in rhythmbox

Mmm?
Sorry, I don’t recognize this. Editor’s picks? I’m very confused.
I use YaST to select and install things. Occasionally zypper.

that seams to be gnome-software
from a terminal try running
gnomesu gnome-software
maybe a gnome user can be of more use
that app should prompt for root password before letting you add/remove software you might be missing a package.
How did you install opensuse from a live image or the DVD installer, why not do an update via zypper or yast?

Hi
Well you don’t use GNOME, so would probably not recognize the GNOME
Software Store…

I can confirm that when I go to install rythmbox from the gnome software tool, I get a password prompt. If you are not seeing a password prompt, I would try creating a new user, to make sure it is not a user configuration issue.

That’s true. Sometimes I do, though
And it installs from the opensuse.org repos, like yast?
I thought it was used to install plugins and addons to gnome, not system
things.

Maybe the op is log into the GUI as root which he should never ever be
