openSUSE slowroll sudo zyper dup ? is this the way to go?

I am new to openSuse since spring

SlowRoll is my daily driver for my Laptop
Loving it

I usually apply updates show by the little system tray gadget (bottom right)
or
I open Discover and apply offered updates

This morning I was having a hard time using my phone in tethering mode, I was suggested to update kernel etc etc Something about missing cdc_mbimcdc_mbim

Doing sudo zypper dup showed " 45 packages " that could be updated !

Should have have done zypper dup from time to time ?

Is it the way, to keep my system up to date for " available kernel updates" ?

I though I was doing ok with my little updates discover or when offered by the system tray icon (bottom right)

Not only from time to time. Always.

Gnome software and Discover lack full functions of a zypper dup. That means, they can not resolve conflicts, downgrade or remove unnecessary packages. The only fully supported graphical tool for upgrade of openSUSE products, which is capable of the described above, is Myrlyn.

Should not us Discover for updates!!! Use Discover for flatpak installed apps.

Use zypper dup only for Slow and TW . Zypper up for Leap

tks
I do have some flatpak apps, so I guess those were the ones I was updating for months LOL

I may be did some zypper dup and don’t remember but it has been a while

What are slowroll and TW default, do they check dup updates by themselves from time to time ? (cronjob)

As for Discover, I guess I can continue to update apps I insalled using flatpak ?

And is it possible discover was also offering to updates " non flatpak " packages ?? I guess yes :- (

No, you as system administrator need to perform zypper dup regularly.

Yes.

Yes. But as described above, Discover cannot perform a full zypper dup equivalent.

Got it tks !!!

you made my day… Happy I didn’t went like this for years ( joke)

I have some other linux distro on my Desktop ( will soon move it to openSUSE) and at some point I would have noticed :

" we’re now at linux 12.x and my openSUSE is stucked at 6.x Mmmmm something’s off "

I humbly dare to point to os-update resp. os-update/README.md at main · openSUSE/os-update · GitHub to automate zypper dup for TW and SR, it can even update Leap (need to specify either dup or up in relating config file /etc/os-update.conf).

tks !! Much appreciated

Is it normal that some package are downgraded ?
I am using Slowroll, this is ok ? If I remember well, I was having audio problem on social media as X and needed to install something for firefox to play audio…

The following product is going to be reinstalled:
“openSUSE Tumbleweed”

zypper dup is capable of performing downgrades if required. But it seems you are hit by another issue wihich is actively discussed in the forum and also reported as bug. Your system seemingly switched to Tumbleweed.
