Hello,
is there any planning to deploy OpenSuse for tablet computers, especially the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 ?
Thanks and Regards
We
Yes. That would be great if opensuse on arm would be more supported.
I have installed opensuse 13.1 on a intel tablet and it works great with a double boot android/opensuse .
Yet, there is a lot of work to improve the tactile/touchscreen interface. Especially, kde is almost unusable. Gnome/gdm is better but needs great improvements.
Supporting a double boot android/opensuse on arm tablets, with a functionnal opensuse window/graphic environment manager, would be really cool.
And it would certainly convince users to keep on using opensuse instead of going android.
There is already a tablet pattern which takes advantage of KDE Plasma Active; http://jolla.com/ produces the Sailfish OS which, though currently only available on a smartphone, is intended for use on tablets as well. A Sailfish tablet could theoretically be installed with openSUSE because, like Tizen, it relies on the GNU utilities rather than Java.
John_Hudson : i haven’t found the kde plasma active in the tablet pattern… Have i missed something ?
If you are running KDE and you select the tablet pattern, you should get Plasma Active as part of the installation.
john_hudson > Well i haven’t seen that. Just checked now. And saw no packages with that name. Can you give more accurate indications ?
If you have KDE installed, you already have the Plasma Active packages. If you select the Tablet pattern, you will see that a number of packages are selected. As I understand, you need to install these packages to enable Plasma Active to respond to the touchscreen properly. Without them, it assumes you are using a mouse/trackpad. I don’t have a tablet; I am only reporting what those who have a tablet have told me.
Ok, thanks. I saw that.
But nevertheless. I don’t see any different behavior with all those packages installed with kde. Kde behaves like on a classical desktop with such packages installed.
Therefore i use gnome and gdm to use my tablet, because, when i have to type something with gnome, the keyboard automatically appears. Whereas it doesn’t appear on kde. Or maybe i missed some configuration on kde ?
If anyone could explain because it doesn’t seem to be obvious how to have such behavior on a tablet with kde.
Will there be a better support of tablets on opensuse 13.2 ?
Hi,
you said you that you have installe opensuse 13.1 on an Intel tablet.
My tablet is a Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 with an Intel Atom Z2560 CPU.
What about installing Opensuse on it ?
Thanks
Because opensuse tablets are cheaper and more available on the market.
And because i would like double boot android/linux opensuse.
