Hello!
I have old SPARC-III SUN-server.
I don’t desire to use Solaris, but Linux.
Can openSUSE be installed and work normally on this server?

No.
For SPARC you may have luck with debian, check at their page if they
support the special architecture of that machine.
If you are not limited to Linux one of the BSD flavors may be an
alternative.

no, but maybe SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (or one of its cousins
can), check at suse.com
i say maybe because of what i found here: http://tinyurl.com/cj57s7v
hmmmm, it might be best though for you to put an actual SUN server
name/model number in your search (should get you down below 6.8k, and
therefore more usable) hits…

Quite interesting, have not seen that, it looks a bit dead - only 11.2
and 11.3.

Hi
Not really (time/contributors maybe?) there was a talk at the conference
the other week about it (Sunday session),
http://bootstrapping-awesome.org/schedule/
I really need to get my SPARC systems out and have a play (I have an
Ultra10, and two SUN Blades (a 100 and a 150)).

martin_helm, dd, malcolmlewis, thanks for your comments!
Earlier I used only one version Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Server) on HP X86 Server.
Therefore I have very little expirience of utilization of Linux.
As I know RHES is a paid version. And the company which I work can paid it, but I - no.
Because I want to use my SPARC-Server for non-commercial purposes, I’m searching free Linux-version.
If I’m understand correctly, SLES is a paid version also RHES.
I’m exploring Internet and reading about Debian now.
If anybody can advise me other free-versions of Linux for SPARC Servers, it would be very helpfull for me.

Hi
Well you could always give the very obsolete 7.3 version a whirl if you
want to play. Else I would get on the factory mailing list or IRC and
ask about the status;

Because I badly understood your latest post, I’m clarifying…
Are you offering me to obtain oldest version of SLES (7.3 for example), which support SPARC-architecture?
And I have to ask this question to opensuse@opensuse.org. Rigth?

neither openSUSE nor SUSE/SLES have supported versions of Linux for
SPARC, free or otherwise…sorry…
google is always a friend, and you might have a look here

I really would go for debian here as that actively supports sparc with
its current versions
http://www.debian.org/ports/sparc/
this link also contains their corresponding sparc mailing lists.
an older blog post from 2008 (without much details) shows someone
installing on the machine you have had success, so I would put my energy
into that if I were you

I have decided that Debian is the best solution of my “SPARC-task”.
Experienced Debian users confirmed that it normally work on Sunfire v240.
Thank you very much for all!
