openSUSE on an A31 Thinkpad

Just had to say that SUSE just works! I have tried many of the “others” on this laptop but none “worked”(I’ve got a stack of cds to prove it). Either they randomly locked up or the effects didn’t work or my wireless wasn’t recognized.

A BIG shout out to all who help put this fantastic distro together!!

Unfortunately you won’t find many developers on the forum, although it’s always good for other users to hear of a success and another happy user. Generally ThinkPads do pretty well on openSUSE – mine has. Enjoy the combination and if any problems occur do post about it in one of the help forums.

well, that’s cool
but you keep up the struggle cuz we are humans and you definitely gonna have problems so like consused said if any problems occur do post about it in one of the help forums.

One issue was a heat problem(160f) but I added the power app to yast and selected powersave and now it is running around 120f.

thinkwiki is a great resource. I just got the middle button to act like a scroll wheel like it is supposed to. I created the file

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

and put in the text

Section “InputClass”
Identifier “Trackpoint Wheel Emulation”
MatchProduct “TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint|DualPoint Stick|Synaptics Inc. Composite TouchPad / TrackPoint|ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint|USB Trackpoint pointing device|Composite TouchPad / TrackPoint”
MatchDevicePath “/dev/input/event*”
Option “EmulateWheel” “true”
Option “EmulateWheelButton” “2”
Option “Emulate3Buttons” “false”
Option “XAxisMapping” “6 7”
Option “YAxisMapping” “4 5”
EndSection

How to configure the TrackPoint - ThinkWiki

works great!

that should have been:shame:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-thinkpad.conf

Thanks for sharing  Might come in handy if I someday get my hands on one of those thinkpads.

Best regards,
Greg

Agree about thinkwiki. Wondering why scrolling with TrackPoint is needed as the TouchPad provides that facility?

my A31 does not have a touchpad. It has 3 buttons and the button-mouse in the middle of the keyboard.

 So that’s a good reason.

well I just redid my install-decided to use xfce this time. I think I’ll keep this for a while- runs really fast and right now is running at 118F. Heat was a big issue as kde ran around 140 and so did gnome.
