openSUSE older versions

Hello!

Since the 12.2 release has the most annoying bug on x.org (top left corner mouse teleport thingy), i won’t be using it until this gets fixed.
There is kind of a workaround for this, but it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.
Especially in VirtualBox which i’m using it in as guest. Horrible.

Does anyone know what older version didn’t have this bug, and where can i download it? Torrent preferably…

I couldn’t find any download links on official openSUSE page, just the latest version, and the latest version is impossible to work with.

How about 12.1 or 11 or something. Some good release with less bugs. I know some 11.something version had an annoying bug where the update manager would update to infinity, stuck in a loop, opening one update after another.
Also, how do i stop it from updating to the latest release? It’s fine if it updates security but i don’t want it to update x.org and kernel…

Please advise.

What bug is that? I don’t understand from your description.

Instead of the click to download, find the place it is downloading from,
go up and you will see all active versions.

11.4 is past its end of life and should not be exposed to untrusted
networks unless it incorporates Evergreen, http://tinyurl.com/4aflkpy

and, to @Vepar:

i have never heard of a bug giving the symptom you describe–can you
send a screen shot to paste.opensuse.org and give us the URL…it sounds
REALLY strange…

and, where would i find this “There is kind of a workaround for this”
you mention…

oh, and by the way which desktop environment are you using, and graphics
card and video driver?

also, try turning off the desktop effects and see if that “top left
corner mouse teleport thingy” goes away…what does that teleport thingy
look like, by the way??

dd

The weird teleport thingy is me not explaining things well in english so i make up some close description.

Basically, the mouse (when moving or standing still or clicking, doesn’t matter), jumps to the top left part of the screen and depending on if it was clicking that time it jumped, it either shows me all the windows i’m having open, tested both gnome and kde, or when i click on something like a link, it clicks the top left corner giving me mozilla menu. The mouse icon stays where it is, but it is registered that the cursor is at the top left corner. Also, when dragging windows, they go super crazy and jump all over the screen most of the time. Making it nearly impossible to drag them anywhere near where you want them cause most of the time they end up “maximized” because when “dropped” they are dropped to the top left corner, regardless of where the mouse pointer is.

I mostly use KDE, but i’ve tried gnome 3 too…
On KDE disabling certain desktop effects removes the window show, but windows and mouse clicks still jump all over.

On Gnome it’s the same, thee’s an extension that disables the top left hot corner (Link to this extension), but you guessed it… Windows and mouse clicks…

My specs are:

AMD Phenom II 1090t 3.2 GHz (virtualisation enabled in bios)
8 GB ram
Geforce 9600 GT 512 MB RAM
1 TB WD caviar black disk
Desktop resolution 1920x1080

I’m running it in Virtualbox as guest on Win7 host, so it’s way worse than in the normal, non virtual system.

I’ve been discussing it here in this topic (screenshot is here):

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/virtualization/480570-opensuse-12-2-guest-misbehaving-please-help-virtualbox.html

And here, where i got the explanation why this is happening:
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52776

Sometimes it’s fine, and sometimes this happens every 2 seconds and for that reason it’s impossible to work.
Workarounds don’t work for me so i’m hoping i can “solve” the issue with a previous version. Untill this gets fixed…

The screenshot in the first link (to a openSUSE forum topic) is KDE desktop showing all open windows. This happens automatically of course.
I wanted to record a video of the bug, but all of a sudden it’s very shy about showing up and letting me explain to everyone what’s happening. Ughh… >:(
If i manage to capture some decent evidence of this bug on video i’ll upload it to youtube and show you here, but i don’t have time today anymore for that so it’ll have to wait.
Wish me luck! rotfl!

Yes it’s a very strange bug, but also annoying and i can’t spent more time trying to fix it. It’s enough. :
If 12.1 is still good, supported and getting updates (without updating it to 12.2), i’ll try that one again. Last time i think it worked fine. I’ll download it and try it.

EDIT: I’m using 64 bit suse version. If that plays any role in this bug i don’t know, but it’s worth mentioning.

Thank you for the links! :good:

What a weird problem…

I hope it is reported “officially”, that is, in Bugzilla, or nothing
will be done to solve it.

Yes, 12.1 has support. And 11.4 has extended support via evergreen (call
it an experimental LTS version).

I’ll report it then. Hopefully it will get resolved in some time.

In the meantime, i’m installing openSUSE 12.1 to test it out.
How do i prevent it from updating to 12.2? I don’t want it to accidentally happen when it’s installing other updates…

I am fairly sure it will not upgrade to 12.2 on its own. You would need to add the repos or use the dvd to upgrade.

Thanks.

A system upgrade is a willful action on your part. It can never happen
accidentally or automatically. Not even if you allow users to do updates
via apper can it happen.

Thank you for your replies!

Then i don’t have to worry about getting the newer version without doing it manually. That’s great! I don’t like automated updates on such scale.
This happened in Ubuntu once where it was constantly asking me if i would like to upgrade to the newer version. Man that was annoying.

Also, i registered on Bugzilla, for kernel related bugs (i think that’s kind of kernel related, i didn’t know exactly where to report it to).
And i think i did report it. It’s my first time doing something like this, and the site is kinda confusing for a first time user. I hope i did the report right and that i actually did report it.
I think i did. I don’t know how to check.

I installed 2 separate versions of 12.1 in virtualbox, one Gnome only, and one KDE only. I tested both and both work great! There’s no such bug present in any of them. Also the whole system seems to be a bit more responsive, even without guest additions installed.
I got help so many times when i had questions and issues, it’s about time i contribute something (as minor as it may be) to help fix things.

I think i’ll stick to this version for now and if someone can check if the bug got reported that would be great. If not, please PM me, pereferably with some explanation on where exactly should i report it to and how.
I’m mostly the “just desktop user” type, with some mild knowledge about terminal commands that i need or wanted to learn, but i want to help if i can, and the weird bug deserves some attention since it renders the system useless and impossible to work with.

Thank you for your help!

You registered? Bugzilla uses the same login as the forum, so please do
not register again. Please ask to have one of the two accounts removed
(support-information forum).

openSUSE:Submitting bug
reports

Once you log in you can tell the system to display all your reports.

Oops. Sorry! I didn’t know.

I’ll ask for the new account to be deleted. It uses the same mail i used to register for SUSE forums, so it’s kinda weird it let me create an account in the first place.

@Vepar cookie is not maintained across forums,features.opensuse.org,bugzilla etc:
You need to login individually everywhere using same novell account
I guess people are getting used to google login once and use picasa, plus, blogger etc without logging in again …Natural i guess

Actually, that’s not strictly the case.

I login here or at www.novell.com/forums.novell.com/forums.suse.com, and
when I access protected resources at Bugzilla.novell.com (for instance),
I do not need to authenticate again.

Or rather, I may need to click the login button, but the existing cookie
is recognized and the authentication proceeds without prompting for
credentials.

I tried out what you said and it works but it doesn’t at features.opensuse.org

Some of the systems use OpenID rather than a direct integration, and
those sites will require authenticating. There are multiple paths to
authentication, and some promote a single-sign-on that’s transparent, and
others provide a “single credential set” that doesn’t do a transparent
authentication if you’re logged in on other sites.

The same would be true for SUSE Studio as well, which uses OpenID for
authentication.

You should report that to admin at opensuse dot org.
