OpenSUSE minimal setup

Okay so I want to install OpenSUSE 13.1 minimal on my PC, but I have a few questions on actually setting it up, I tried with SUSEStudio but failed epically.

1 - KDE5 - Is it stable.
I love the look of this over any other environment at this time, looks so minimal but elegant, so I want to know whats its stability like on OpenSuSE? should I use it for daily system, nothing as this will be more of a play machine than critical, my Laptops for that.

2 - Steam on OpenSuSE.
Okay so for downtime I want to play some games, I would like to know how stable it is, and do games like Borderlands 2 and Witcher 2 actually work?, I remember using Arch linux and not seeing Borderlands but Ubuntu had it in the steam library.

3 - AMD Drivers - 14.9 on OpenSuSE.
Does web yast offer it? or do I have to manually install it from AMDs website?

4 - Windows 8 Fonts in OpenSuSE.
I love the look of Windows 8, but I like the fonts more, so is there a way to replace the fonts in OpenSuSE, and actually get the font rendering working correctly?

I tried it a months ago and I would not call it ready for day to day
use, just wait at least till 13.2 comes out, should be usable by then.

Steam works fine, I use it every week and have not had issues with it.

This is kind of a broad question, what do you mean by “working
correctly”? You can change font display configuration in the KDE
settings as well as doing it manually. See:

If you want to add fonts (protip:

will need to get your hands on the original fonts and then check out:

What you want is by no means “minimal”. You probably didn’t fail, but minimal in this world means: headless, i.e. no X, i.e. no desktop, and certainly not a framework as KDF5 is.

On KDF5: it’s not ready, but getting there. I have an extra install on my laptop with Factory/KDF5, just for testing, playing around, and it does quite well.

Yes, and none of them contains a desktop environment.
I was also in doubt what the OP means with a minimal install that includes a Desktop, game playing and all sorts of special features for a GUI setup.

I had a problem to get witcher2 to run on openSUSE 13.1 64 bit.

After reading a lot which did not seem to help.
Start steam, go to your library, right click on Witcher 2, select options, go to the beta tab, and opt in for the beta. rotfl!

No symlinks made as suggested in some topics.

I did install two things though ( not sure is they are needed)

libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0 => not found
libcurl-gnutls.so.4 => not found

I could find the first two, but not the third one, so used again google.
Then I found the opt in for beta solution.

It might be that the kernel devs broke something :open_mouth:
I saw Linus Torvalds respond on the github, in a Witcher 2 topic. ( never break user space )

I did not use all the other stuff mentioned in the topic, I only installed two Files libSDL2-2.0.so.0, and libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0

Then opt-in for beta which solved all.

For what the User is asking, he shouldn’t consider a “minimal” install but a lighter desktop. Choosing LXDE or XFCE should provide a fully graphical and working environment capable of playing games without the “heavy” extras KDE (and Gnome) provide.

Not suitable for what the OP required are the “Minimal X” desktop(more suitable for emergencies) and “No X” server install.
If a User really wanted to build a dedicated, minimal image I would recommend starting with a JeOS (Just enough OS) image.
