openSUSE mailing list opensuse@opensuse.org and gmail

The “owner” program that runs the openSUSE mailing list opensuse@opensuse.org is rejecting my attempts to reply to the list. I asked if gmail worked BEFORE I switched over to gmail from my ISP provided email account and was told it did. What must one do to make sure that the program will not reject your replies?

My inquires to the URL in the rejection message have gone unanswered. There is no appropriate section on the forums for this kind of query.

Gmail turns phone numbers and email addresses into URLs and I think this is part of he problem with the program managing the list. I removed my phone numbers from my sig and that didn’t fix the problem. Gmail still turns the originators email address into a URL. if is what is causing the rejection the mail manger program is broken. I am a little put out and I am sorry if I come across as hostile.

Personally I use Thunderbird to post in Mailing lists, even with my Gmail accounts
You must use Plain text messages

that’s list etiquette, but i don’t think html messages are being rejected.
from time to time somebody posts html, some knowingly, others unknowingly,
which draws flak from the list (rightly so).

when changing email addresses for openSUSE lists i made a stupid mistake
once: i forgot to ‘tell’ the list about my new address, which of course
led to messages being rejected. i’m pretty sure you’re (OP) are not that
spaced out – just to make sure…

So Gmail does not work with opensuse@opensuse.org usless you use a email client? This defeats the whole purpose of using Gmail. Thunderbird is not portable to my phone or tablet. The Web interface Gmail is portable across devices and can be accessed anyplace you have an connection to the internet. Thunderbird sits on my Desktop computer at home and it not portable across devices or accessible any place that a device can access the internet.

The people that responded that Gmail worked with oensuese@opensuse.org were not telling the truth. This is very broken though I do understand the reason of being able to filter out the spam which always has a URL included.

I may just drop the lists entirely then. It was the way I was staying connected to openSUSE. I am very bummed out by this.

I reiterate my advice:
Use Thunderbird (or at least try it and see)

Phani I unsubscribed my old ISP based account and resubscribed with my Gmail account

Whatever my replies to the list are being rejected and I have not had a response from the “owner” to any of my quires. I have not idea what the owner program is rejecting my replies and I do see URLs in replies sometimes.

Don’t give in so easily.

There are plenty of seasoned ML users here that will surely be able to help, I just took the easy route. And I don’t use the plethora of portable devices available.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Let me restate. There is no Thunderbird for my Phone or my Tablet. If I am going to use Thunderbird there is no reason to use Gmail that I can see.

Don’t know.
But what about Opera
It can work email like Thunderbird

did you see this link: openSUSE:Mailing lists - openSUSE ?

i’m not sure i understand what’s being said on that page, but it looks like you have to specify the address in a certain way.

also, there was or is some problem accessing the openSUSE list archive, as some users stated in the list who were getting access denied errors from the archives. perhaps that’s related to the list not accepting posts from your gmail address.

i’d give it a little more time and see what happens; perhaps use the old email address in the meantime.

No Opera except a mini browser for IOS.

That directs you to this page https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=7190 which has nothing useful in relation to mailing lists I can see from skimming it.\

I am going to not be rash. I am just bummed by this is all.

i didn’t mean that link, but the next line:

to:(opensuse -opensuse-factory) OR cc:(opensuse -opensuse-factory)
to:(opensuse-factory) OR cc:(opensuse-factory)

that’s what i think may be trying to say something about how to specify
the address in gmail. why don’t you try to put brackets and/or dashes in
there and see if that helps?

(must admit that i’m too lazy right now to change my own address, or
create another one to test this – specially since i know something with
these lists & permissions is going on at present; whoever manages this was
or is on holiday, and everyone is waiting for it (access to the archives)
to be sorted out.

i don’t believe the lists don’t work with gmail; it’s far too common an
email provider for that to be the case. but perhaps there’s a trick to it,
since gmail does things differently from normal clients sometimes.

Yea I can’t fathom the meaning of those lines either. It doesn’t seem to make sense to me as to what they are trying to say.
I have resubscribed with my ISP provided email account in addition to my Gmail account.
At least I can reply from my ISP account in Thunderbird with out getting rejected.

I’ll bet you can do the same with gmail thru Thunderbird.

LOL: You ended up doing exactly as I suggested.

Actually I didn’t I am not using Gmail through Thunderbird. I am using my ISP provided email address. I can’t see going through the bother of setting up Thunderbird for Gmail when I don’t ever intend to use it to access Gmail. I am trying to migrate as much as possible to Gmail and accessing that through Google apps for IOS or Chrome on the Desktop to access Gmail. If I have to use Thunderibird I’ll use my ISP’s email service like I have for the past ten years.

is it possible to set up gmail to send only text messages to
@opensuse.org addresses?

[or maybe you have done that and not been successful–i admit i didn’t
study all of this thread in great detail…but i guess there are lots
of list users on mobile devices…so yours is not an unsolvable problem
limited only to using thunderbird or any other non-mobile friendly email
clients.]

Hi
What mobile device?

I would look at using gmane for the lists, rather than direct. On usenet google goes straight to /dev/null for me as it produces so much spam. Have you sent an email to the list admin?

Else get on IRC #opensuse-project and speak to someone direct.

Malcolm

It’s a iPad and an iPhone and the Gmail browser interface in Chrome. Both of the rejected reply’s I sent were from the Browser interface via Google Chrome.
I have sent two emails to the address given in the rejection message. No reply.
The list is opensuse@opensuse.org. so I don’t think the opensuse-project people would even tolerate me. I don’t want to get in that channel and be called stupid and told to RTFM.

The people who use the list and use Gmail don’t frequent the forums it seems and the instructions for using Gmail on the wiki are not informative. I am going to wait is see if I ever get a reply out of the two messages I have sent. I have messages from the list coming to Gmail and to my regular ISP account at this point. My input to the list isn’t valuable enough to matter anyway.
