I just unlocked a Windows XP password using the excellent Offline NT Password & Registry Editor disc. It made me wonder. What if I die and my wife needs to get something off my laptop but can’t get into it since she doesn’t know my password. Is there a utility like the above out there to unlock OpenSUSE / Linux user accounts?
A Live cd.
Hmm, nice answer. I suppose I should have tried doing that before posting this
I should be able to access the users files but would I be able to unlock the account (i.e. Change or blank a user account password) with a live cd?
How would that work?
On the live CD system you are root. You can mount the root partition of the system somewhere. Then use the passwd command with the -P option.
I found this by reading man passwd. Another "Hmm, nice answer. I suppose I should have tried doing that before posting this "?
rotfl!
