Opensuse Leap: LEAP 15.6 vs 15.5

Hi everyone. After months of experience with Tumbleweed and SlowRoll I arrived at Leap by chance. It was unexpected and very positive. Both in the vm and on my old Leap laptop it is excellent. Out of curiosity I had installed 15.6 which is in alpha. Now I would like to bring the version, which is already working very well, back to version 15.5. version 15.5 should be even more stable and secure. So far I haven’t had any problems with 15.6 but from an alpha version I expect it may become unstable. What do you recommend, do the downgrade to 15.5 or wait for the release of the stable version with alpha 15.6. Thanks in advance for the opinions.

You can’t “downgrade” (if you mean by that doing it without a fresh installation).

You can of course install 15.5 and then have a stable and supported LEAP version (which is 15.6 not of course, that is more for testing and then reporting problems so that the end-product is as good as possible).

Hello hevv. Thank you for your opinion and advice. This 15.6 is the best Linux I’ve ever tried. The first one that doesn’t give me lag in the VM. I haven’t tried Leap 15.5 but this 15.6 is excellent. After this I deleted almost all other (problematic) vm. I definitely made a mistake in not installing 15.5 before the various TW and SR ones. With my configuration it would have saved me a lot of problems.

A downgrade is possible if one replaces the 15.6 repositories with 15.5 repositories and runs ‘zypper dup’. Same method as an upgrade, but in reverse.

hui was right, but saying it’s not possible is not correct. In my experience it was very similar to going from Leap to Tumbleweed to Leap. The only way I know of to get the full distribution without a lot of manual effort is to do a clean install.

@aaronrusz HI. I’m sorry but I didn’t really notice your answers. Even if I’m late, thank you very much. In fact during this period I used Leap 15.6 a lot. Leap 15.5 never managed to run smoothly in my vm. It also has software that is too old for my needs. Right now I’m with Leap 15.6 KDE and XFCE and slowroll always KDE, in vm. In my old laptop I installed slowroll OS with kernel-longterm as the only one. Again apologies. Thank you
