openSUSE Leap-16 installation failure

Hi, as the title says Leap failed to install here.
Steps I did:
Download the offline .iso, use suse studio and dd to usb stick. Both failed.
Here is a screenshot of the last line from the installer.

I’m cross referencing this thread to this:
openSUSE Leap 16 .iso repositories question - English / Install/Boot/Login - openSUSE Forums

This thread is similar to this but there was no solution.
Leap 16 not installing - English / Install/Boot/Login - openSUSE Forums

For (2), that person never came back with a response to the suggestions, and hasn’t been seen since that day :+1:

For (1), about your screenshot … to me, it does not look “complete” … what I mean is, I think there are missing lines of text BEFORE the “Finished dracut” (first line).

Are there any lines before “Finished dracut” that announce “entering emergency mode”, or similar wording?

The few lines in your screenshot seem to indicate a possible failure, hence resulting in “emergency mode”.

How did you execute the “dd …” command to create the thumb-drive?

@conram Can you confirm whether the system is booting the installer in UEFI mode, and whether Secure Boot is disabled? Mixed or “auto” firmware modes can cause the installer to fail very early like this.

Also, is CSM / Legacy boot disabled in firmware?

@deano_ferrari Yes the installer in UEFI mode
I already tried CSM “disabled and enabled”
Secure Boot, the choice here is “custom and standard” and already tried both.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

Did you verify the SHA256 checksum of the ISO first?

@deano_ferrari Yes SHA256 checksum is identical with the iso
When I installed tumbleweed in this desktop, I didn’t hit this kind of problem.

Good. Don’t forget to answer myswtest’s questions as well.

@myswtest yep thanks, this is the “dd” command

sudo dd if=/dev/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdd(usb stick)
With regards to the screenshot it is what it is, I didn't see any unusual.

There was no “emergency mode” it stop at the "a start job blah… 50min’

@conram you should be using some additional options… I don’t use sudo either…who knows what that does…

See my method here: https://forums.opensuse.org/t/leap-16-0-online-installer-not-working/190197/17

I will try that now. Thanks.

@malcolmlewis I followed your “dd advice” and it works.
There is another problem. I want to install the Leap 16 on SSD connected via sata to usb. the problem the installer cant see it.

The SSD (/dev/sdd is missing in the selection
The installer usb is the /dev/sde
Is it even possible to install to a usb drive :worried:
There is still one extra SATA in th mobo but I am being lazy to open the case and connect the offending SSD.

@conram so what driver is the USB device using on another system when you plug it in? If you unplug and plug the USB device back in and re-scan drives does it show up?

@malcolmlewis So I made a bobooo.
I put the iso on my SSD not in the usb stick. I rectified it and partition the SSD for boot efi and two ext4 partitions for /home and /. I put the iso image in the usb stick and attempted another installation. The installation went thru. When I reach the partitioning stage in agama that’s where I encounter some difficulty. Compared to the yast installer this one is less user friendly. I had difficulty mounting all the three remaining drives then I decided to drop the installation afraid to hose my two os in the other two SSD and my storage in the HHD. For a one drive install agama is ok. Better luck next time I am sticking with tumbleweed. Thanks for the help it helped a lot.
On a side note:
It didn’t detect the SSD on usb. I have to take it out and plugin again then rescan before it was detected.
One more thing I can’t find the button to cancel the installation, I just turned off the desktop switch to stop the installation.

@conram I would do that sort of thing post install, Leap 16.0 is still using grub2-efi so os-prober would do it’s thing if wanting to let Leap 16.0 control boot…

Thanks, I can do it but just taking out the partitioning that agama wants to do is kinda not easy to do. Probably this one needs a test machine to learn my way around it.

@conram You can play with the storage configuration proposals without committing to an install.

@conram highlight and hit the trash can? Then just add what you want and tell it not to touch the other devices? Likewise have a read of the link @deano_ferrari provided.

:grinning: That’s what I like with this friendly forums I almost want to put it on a shelf,
Then here comes another savior. Ok I will do another try, thanks guys. :+1:

Hi, I finally figured out the storage section of the agama installer, “but” it took me two hours to have all my drives position the way I want it to be. My honest opinion is agama as said to be the modern installer is no where near the old reliable yast installer. Yast is very straight forward and it will be dumb to miss or hose the drives. IMHO for those who have complicated storage set up this one is not for the one with a faint of heart. It is not very intuitive and I thought maybe in the future I’m hoping it to be simplistic. Ex: the trash can  thanks @malcolmlewis for pointing it. When he mentioned it I thought he was just joking at first :grinning: then I discovered it and I said huh! he was serious. @deano_ferrari and @myswtest thanks guys for taking time writing your inputs in this thread.
Lastly in the end I decided not to install Leap 16 but I gained experience and a bit of knowledge regarding the new installer that if in the future Tumbleweed decided to use it, I won’t be scratching my head and pulling my hair. :+1:

@conram Your wish is granted, Agama is there for Tumbleweed now…
