When I start my system, I regularly get messages about some updates from this applet somewhere down to the right on the panel. Don’t know its name, nor what its function is since I already have Yast that can do updates.
Today, I saw there was a kernel update. I applied it and when I rebooted, I got no graphical login screen any longer.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that for months I installed the nvidia drivers ‘the hard way’ by compiling them against the kernel sources.
Since a few weeks I use the nvidia drivers from the nvidia repository. They should update automatically with every kernel update, which is easier than doing it ‘the hard way’ every time my kernel updates.
Was this the first kernel update since then and did the system somehow get confused?
Some help would be welcome.
My present kernel is 4.12.14-lp151.28.36-default
Forgot to tell that the command
systemctl get-default
yields this result:
graphical.target
Well, things worked again after booting into the older kernel 4.12.14-lp151.28.32-default and then upgrading via Yast to the new kernel.
In wonder what went wrong when using the package manager icon down to the right on the panel. I wonder why this thing is there at all, where one has Yast to do all software updates.
Hi
Install the hard way, or just watch/wait for the updated nvidia drivers to update then install the updated kernel drivers. The process takes time to rebuild the nvidia drivers and then get them published by Nvidia.
I think some folks lock the kernel until they see the updated nvidia drivers appear, unlock the kernel and update that…
I find it far quicker the hard way and well as getting the latest driver (eg running 440.44);
