OpenSuse Leap 15.1 installation stalls after installing all packages

Hi,

Exactly as the title says. I’m trying to install OpenSuse Leap 15.1 but after installing all packages the installer stalls. I tried both KDE and GNOME variants but to the same result.

I install to separate partition on the laptop where Win10 is already installed. On this partition an older version of Leap has been installed.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Łukasz

Maybe try a textmode install.

On the kernel command line, add “textmode=1” (without the quotes).

If this is using BIOS booting, just enter “textmode=1” in the space for kernel parameter (a box toward the bottom of the screen).

If this is using UEFI booting, then hit ‘e’ on the boot menu entry for install. Then scroll down to find a line that starts “linuxefi”. Hit the END key to get to the end of the line, and then append “textmode=1” (might need a leading space). Then CTRL-X will continue booting.

I’ll note that it is possible that you were just too impatient. After it has installed all packages, there is a period where various scripts are being run to tweak the setup following the package install. That can take a while, especially on a slower machine.

I’ve run the installer in the text mode but it stalled in exactly the same place (waited 45 minus to be sure ;)).

Okay. It should not take that long to run scripts. You probably ran into a bug in the installer.

If you want to try again, then go back to the graphic install. And do only a minimal install (select generic desktop).

If it stalls, you can use CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a root command line, and maybe use “ps” (or “top” if that is on the installer) to see if something is looping. And if CTRL-ALT-F2 doesn’t do anything, then the system must be locked up. If you can identify a problem, then run “save_y2logs”, and the save the generated file somewhere (maybe mount a USB drive and save there). Then you can report a bug.

If you want to try something else, you could try to install Leap 15.0 or Tumbleweed. Again, do a minimal install. And, if that works, we can guide you in an online upgrade or downgrade to Leap 15.1.

Once stalled, in text or graphical mode, try to switch to the “10th terminal” by pressing CTRL-ALT-F10. There is often diagnostic information there.

But the last line shown on the screen might not be the last message in time - the messages coming onto the screen are not in actual time sequence.

Also, try to pass parameters to the kernel for installation, which often make installation more compliant with various hardware. For example,

nomodeset acpi=off noapic

Also ensure your installation media is good. i.e. confirm you performed the appropriate check sums on the downloaded openSUSE LEAP 15.1.
