Opensuse lags after update

I’m running openSUSE 11.1 64-bit and I’ve been running it for a few months now with no problems. I did a few updates and now all my windows and browsers are really laggy whenever I move them. My mouse moves around fine and scrolling isn’t a problem when web browsing. However it’s extremely laggy, and frustrating, when opening and reading documents. I also can’t multi-task anymore. If I have music running in the background and then start using a spreadsheet, or open Kate or Eclipse the music will stop for a few seconds and then start back up. It’s like it has to wait until whatever I’m doing completes its task and then it can go back to the program running in the background. The more I have open the worse it gets.

I’m not 100% positive that it’s the updates that I did that caused it, it’s just that that is the only thing I can remember doing right before the problem started. I had a similar problem after installing the ATI drivers a while back, but it was slightly different. I kept having Kwin crash on me and browsing the web was near impossible (I’m not seeing these effects this time). I still do have the ATI drivers installed but I’ve had them installed for a few months now without this problem. If anybody believes that it is the drivers I’ll uninstall them to find out.

I understand that openSUSE and KDE can be a bit resource intensive compared to some other distros and desktops but I think my specs should definitely be up to the challenge, especially since this wasn’t happening from the get go.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.1GHz AM3
RAM: 4GB Crucial Ballistix (2x 2GB) 240-pin DDR3 1333
PSU: 500W
GPU: HIS Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit PCI-E 2.0
HDD: 80GB Seagate 5400RPM

Let me know if you need any other details or more specifics. I’m still pretty new to Linux (learning fast and loving it) so details steps are appreciated.

Thanks

My guess is you need to re install your ATI drivers.
I did see a ATI xorg related update very recently, whether that is what has caused it or is a fix, I don’t know.

Thanks,

I’ll uninstall and see if that makes a difference. If it does I’ll reinstall to see if the problem comes back.

Yup that seems to be it. I’ve uninstalled it and everything seems to be running normally again. I’ll install again tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.
