OpenSuse Installation: Screen goes black

Hi,

i intend to migrate from Vista to Open Suse because i don’t want to support Microsoft’s criminal policies anymore. I have a 130 GB NTFS partition free for the Linux system.

I just downloaded Open Suse 11.1 in iso format and burnt it on DVD. I booted the system from DVD, chose “Installation” in the Green Suse Menu. A Message appears “Loading Linux Kernel”. After this procedure, the screen goes black, and nothing happens anymore except for some Hard Disk activity. I tried launching the Linux Install via Vista Linux Installer, just for the same result.

What can i do to install Open Suse ?

thanks a lot for your expertise!

What is the “Vista Linux installer”???
I’ve had black screens during the installer, so as long as there’s HD activity just be patient and see what happens. Maybe try booting from the LiveCD rather than the DVD to check basic compatibility with your system, and then install from that. The DVD is a waste of space of you have a reasonably fast internet connection: you can install all the stuff on the DVD later, once everything works.

Welcome to our forum, and WELCOME to openSUSE Linux.

Please, first, did you read our stickie:
NEW Users - Suse-11.1 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums

it is very important you compare the md5sums BEFORE burning the CD/DVD. Please do that now, and confirm the downloaded iso file is ok. Also, it is important you burned at a slow speed to the highest quality media you could lay your hands on. Please also confirm that.

Note when the initial green installation screen comes up, did you try the “Fail Safe settings” ? You can also, if necessary, in that menu, press F3 and choose “Text Mode”. Does that help?

Can you tell us precisely what motherboard you have? What sort of hard drive controller? If you have any USB devices plugged in (other than you keyboard mouse) can you remove them ?

Trying from the liveCD as gminnerup suggested is also a possibility, as the installers are not exactly the same between CD and DVD. … The biggest concern here is the hiccup could be due to your motherboard or hard drive sata controller being a bit exotic, and requiring a custom boot code (which can be difficult to identify).
