openSuSE installation locks up at autodetect

During installation, I reach the autodetect, and once it gets past the network detection, it tries the next test, but once it gets to a certain percentage (I didn’t take note of what it was), I drop down to the terminal, then to a black screen. Nothing works at this screen. Keyboard lights turn off and don’t respond.

When I boot into openSuSE again, it says that the previous installation failed, and asks if I want to resume the installation. I say yes, it begins autodetection again. I say no, I’m able to get to the login screen in X, but there are no user accounts listed, however, I can still log in as root. When I try to use the Graphics Card and Monitor tool in YaST, nothing happens.

I have a nVidia GeForce MX 4000 card. I have tried to install the drivers, but I couldn’t because the kernel headers were missing even though they were installed. The drivers didn’t work through YaST either. I have even tried to use the xorg configure utility, but I always get the error that the xorg command doesn’t exist.

I reinstalled to clear out all extra kernels created by trying to install the drivers, and still got the same error.
Any ideas on what’s going wrong?
