I am running OpenSUSE Leap 42.2 as a guest VM in two VMware platforms: Workstation Player 12.5.1 and ESXi 6.0 update 2 (both are latest releases). The Leap upgrade was done by booting the 42.2 full DVD ISO and choosing upgrade, which executed flawlessly (good work, folks!)
Previously, the Leap 42.1 guest would re-fit it’s screen when the host console view was re-sized - that is, it changed its resolution to match the console window. Very nice feature. Following the Leap 42.2 upgrade, this no longer works - the guest screen resolution is fixed and won’t re-fit any more. Of course I can manually change the resolution (KDE control center) to something suitable at the moment, but auto-refit is gone. This behavior is identical in Workstation Player versus ESXi. I tried using VMware’s own VMware Tools in place of open-vm-tools, and that made no difference.
For the time being manually changing the resolution as needed is the workaround.
Note that a brief scan of this topic on the internet revealed one possible explanation, that it could be a problem with Linux kernel 4.4.
You might first verify that your system is fully updated. Run the following command in an elevated console in your Guest
zypper up
You can also verify that VMware Tools is installed and functioning properly in other aspects, do something like do a copy/paste from the Guest to the HostOS (which verifies a shared clipboard) and/or configure a Shared Folder.
Since this is an ESXi deployment, are you remoting into your machine?
I assume you’re not accessing the machine from a local console (which isn’t officially supported but can be done with a hack), what kind of remote access are you using, VNC or X over SSH or something else?
Oops, I forgot to specify: I am using the vSphere web client to access the OpenSUSE graphic console from ESXi. Both the ESXi vSphere web client and VMware Workstation Player experienced the same loss of console screen resizing after the OS upgrade.
Yes VMware tools (when I tested with that) and open-vm-tools were confirmed running. But my testing was just a few days after Leap 42.2 came out so by now I have many updates to apply which could indeed make a difference. Anyway thanks for helping.
Updating Leap 42.2 does not solve the problem. I also heard another account that this problem began with some recent Linux kernel update. So it looks like this is not a problem related to OpenSUSE and we’ll have to wait for VMware Tools, open-vm-tools, or the kernel folks to find a solution.
Meanwhile, the best work-around is to set the screen resolution manually to something that will fit in a maximized view window, or switch to full-screen mode and set the resolution to that of your display. If you shrink the maximized view window, you’ll get the scrollbars, so other than avoid that you’ll be happy.
TSU thanks, as always the folks who reply this forum are top notch. I just upgraded 4 of 5 workstations and all 3 VMs to Leap 42.2, and this is going great, such an amazing awesome distribution - really the best out there.
FYI.
You may be seeing something specific to ESXi and the VSphere clientand should probably be posted to the VMware forums.
I am not seeing a similar problem running any openSUSE including 42.2 in a VMware Workstation 12.5.
You might also test whether connecting using VNC or X over SSH is similarly affected.
