OpenSUSE GNOME version, blank screen with mouse on login.

Good day, all. After a recent update, one of my computers now displays a black/gray screen with a mouse cursor once I log into gnome. tty works fine. other window managers work fine. Graphics driver works fine. I’ve tried renaming gnome config files so gnome could regenerate them, problem persists. I don’t know where any gnome logs are.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

i am having the same problem on 3 laptops.

Hi
What graphics driver? Are you running extensions? If you create a test user and login to the Gnome Shell for the test user does it work?

Nvidia Proprietary driver. A few small extensions, yes. I haven’t tried a test user yet, I will report back when I get the chance.
Thanks, Malcolm.

It is the latest driver, 390.25-4.1
Uninstall it and use the opensource until its updated. Some had success with re-installing the driver, but I didn’t. See also:

I read that adding your user to the video group is a workaround.

Yet, not for me. Already was a member of the video group.

Hi
Could also try this tweak as per the bug report;

When I get back to the computer, I will try all of those. I’ll let you know which, if any, works.
Thanks, folks.
Take care.

First thing I tried was the video group, worked like a charm. Thanks, Ricochet!

I’m afraid I won’t be undoing it and trying the others, though. I’ve learned to let things be when they work – in some cases.

Take care!
