OpenSUSE freezes randomly on an Acer Aspire 7520

Hello,

I own an Acer Aspire 7520 (nVidia 7000m graphics) laptop which runs OpenSUSE 11.1 and I’m very happy with it, but there is one problem.

The system freezes at randomly. What happens is that everything halts (still see the desktop (windows)) except for the mouse, which is still moving.
I don’t have any clue why this is happening… Maybe it’s Compiz but I’m not sure…

Is there anyone with the same issue who has the solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

Grtz,
sjoewert

P.S. sorry for my English…

Maybe it’s Compiz? You ask.
Why not try without it.

But having said that, it should work really.
Any more detail in the information would help. KDE/Gnome?

I’m now working without Compiz turned on, and therefore didn’t have any problems…
But I’m not sure wether I can say the problem is caused by Compiz, so I’m still trying.

I’m sorry I didn’t tell enough information… I’m quite new to this forum so thats why.
I’ve installed OpenSUSE 11.1 with Gnome desktop…

Grtz

Thing is too, just to say Acer Aspire means nothing to me, unless I google it and then it’s still not accurate really. Put some detail about the machine: RAM, Processor etc…
I don’t run Gnome. But for me KDE4 and Compiz work fine. have you installed the Nvidia driver?

Use a su terminal and do:

lspci

find the part about your graphics, it’s near the beginning of the output, post it here.

Then do this for the graphics again, same part:

lspci -k

This will give us more info. Post here.

What happens when you run this command from a terminal

glxgears

NVIDIA - openSUSE

When I type glxgears in Gnome terminal, I get a lovely window with three spinning gears in reb, green and blue…

I’ve installed the x11-video-nvidiaG02 and nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-KERNEL packages for the nVidia 7000m card… I’m (almost) sure it’s the right driver, because I can run the full 1440x900 resolution.

Info about the machine:
3GB DDR2
160GB HDD
Amd Athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor TK-57 (1,9GHZ, 2x256KB L2 cache)
up to 1407MB shared memory to the nVidia
Atheros 5007eg wireless lan card…

I hope you now got enough information about the machine…

Thank you for all your help so far…

It seems like your graphics is installed ok, though your lspci -k was certainly not done correctly, maybe you pasted the wrong info.

I have absolutely no experience with Gnome and Compiz in openSUSE. But your 3D seems fine and the kernel module is ok for the video driver. I use Compiz in kde4 on my laptop with no issues to report. If a gnome user doesn’t come in on this, start a new thread with Compiz in the title.

Okay, I’ll start a new thread, but I’ve got one question left for you.

Could it really be that the problem is caused by Gnome? I always think gnome is a shell around the operating system, and has nothing to do with the programs installed on the machine.

Also, should I try KDE instead of Gnome and watch whether the problem still occurs? If yes, is there an easy way to switch between these two desktops?

Again thanks for your time and help.

Grtz

You need to disable auto login to switch between desktops:
Disable Auto-Login - openSUSE Forums

To install kde4
first add these repos:

kde4.2 Desktop
Index of /repositories/KDE:/42/openSUSE_11.1

kde4.2 Community
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE_42

Then go to software management
select patterns filter and tick kde4 desktop - it should automatically add kde4base too.
accept

if you get dependency issues - post them here. You can save the error to file with the expert button.

Thank you…
Now I’ve installed KDE 4 to my computer and login to a KDE4 session.
In KDE when I try to start for example Evolution (which belongs to Gnome I believe) all the desktop-effects turn off, and all the title bars of the windows disappear, but you can still use the program (without title-bars).
???

Grtz

Check under: Config desktop - General tab - Default Applications - Window Manager
See that it is set to use kwin

I actually don’t get anything out of this post… I’m sorry to say so… Where do I find Config desktop or anything??

Grtz

From the start/menu button in lower left of screen - mine is here
http://thumbnails7.imagebam.com/3410/c753e034098874.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/c753e034098874/)

Or in the search bar type configure desk

Okay thanks, I use the Dutch translation of OpenSUSE so that’s why I couldn’t find it…

It was set to Compiz, and I set it to Kwin… Now the windows seem to work fine…

But the problem was a freezing system while Compiz was turned on… I’ll try out KDE for another while and see whether it freezes again…

Grtz

Some of the effects you might want and can’t just figure where the settings are. Look here:
http://thumbnails13.imagebam.com/2728/7cfdd827279032.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/7cfdd827279032)

Okay!! I see… But sometimes the problem is still there (no title bars, etc.)… And Gnome (the desktop is like most actually) is still freezing sometimes… I don’t know why, and how…

Maybe you’ve got any other ideas about how to solve it.? I’d really love it!!

Thanks
Grtz

No title bars even in kde4?

Post result of terminal:

zypper lr

Now the title bars don’t seem to disappear any more… The problem only appeared in KDE…
In Gnome the freezing of the system is still the problem…

Grtz…

repo 2 in that list kde4 community

should be:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE_42

check and make sure it’s the 42 version. If not - delete repo 2 and add this one in.
I’m not saying this is the source of your issues, but I just want you to be correct.

Make sure in Software Management - filter by repo. There are no red or blue packages showing. Use update all in this list Unconditionally if there are quite a number as marking them individually can be pain, if they are just blue, do update all if newer avail.
