Further development of YaST is been indeed abandoned by SUSE. That means indeed that the project can only continue if the community takes over. But all that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Ruby.
Ruby was not a factor in the decision of stopping the YaST development and the version of Ruby in which is written has nothing to do with its maintainability, neither by the openSUSE community or by anyone.
