I’ve just installed openSUSE 11.0 x86_64 on a new machine (dual booting with Vista). All went well until I tried to install the nvidia driver using the ‘one-click-install’ option. Installing the drivers went OK but sax2 failed to detect the nvidia chipset after several attempts.
Now (perhaps coincidentally?) the machine will not boot into openSUSE - the boot stalls with a lot of error messages, amongst which are:
BUG: unable to handle kernal null pointer dereference at 0000…02
DWARF2 unwinder stuck at system_call_after swapgs+0x8a/0x8f
Leftover inexact backtrace:
‘sbin/modprobe’ abnormal exit
I get the same even if I try to boot into failsafe mode.
Fortunately I had changed the rootnoverify to (hd0,0) in the grub menu before this problem arose (thanks for the tip) so I can still boot vista.
Is there anything I can do short of reinsatlling openSUSE 11.0? If I do that, how do I avoid the same problem again?
Thanks for any help.
