[opensuse-factory] Power management bugs

Hi
Anyone else notice this issue?
[opensuse-factory] Power management bugs](http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00654.html)

I have used the fix on my netbook.

I have 11.4 M5 in my laptop without problems. NO no no no no I have not problems. All are ok.
But thank you, maybe other users have problems with that.

Hi
Did you check your your drive?

hdparm -B /dev/sda

Unplug the power and check again with the above command, then keep an eye on;

smartctl -a /dev/sda |grep Load_Cycle_Count

Yes I have already checked my drive and there are not problems.
Thank you malcolmlewis for that maybe other users have this problem.

Yes I have this issue too, also on openSUSE 11.3.
Maybe there is an reason for the 282 relocated sectors on my harddisk…
(but they seems to be not increasing for a long time)

Do you refer to the proposed workaround here:

I thought it might be desirable to have the workaround in this bugreport,
without people having to read through the RedHat report to dig it out for
themselves, so here goes:

To turn off the disk spin down etc., do:

echo -n > /etc/pm/power.d/harddrive

chmod a-x /etc/pm/power.d/harddrive

?

Also the GNOME power management changing seems to be buggy
in the aspect that dis-choosing

  • ] spin down hard disks when possible*
does not change in that behavior.

I think many users will not hear
their hard drive repeatedly stopping and starting if running on battery
if the (cpu-) ventilator in the laptop is too loud…

Using powertop to decrease (or increase?) the writing/access frequency is something I have thought about also (but have not tested it jet on 11.3 or 11.4).
I was not sure but I think in openSUSE 11.2 (with or without powertop???) this issue was not there - or at least the harddisk stopped (for a maybe reasonable time) only when I decreased the frequency of access to the hard disk with powertop.
