Opensuse doesn't recognize this ethernet card

Hello all,

I have been trying to configure an ethernet card with no success. I connect the internet to my ethernet port and then start YAST. I get the following:

**Network Settings
Name: Ethernet Network Card
IP Address: Not configured

Ethernet Network Card (not connected)
BUS ID: 0000:00:0f0
(unable to configure network card because kernel device is not present)**

I also get more information listed below. As mentioned before, the ethernet is connected tot he system. Why is Linux not recognizing/allowing for the configuration of the ethernet on this machine?

TIA,
Casey

I looked here:

And it said to install the two rpms above - but it didn’t work.

Also saw that it seems as though the driver needed for the ethernet card called “forcedeth.o”.

Hi
You are running SLES 10?? This is the openSUSE forum you may wish to
look at posting your issue in the SLES forums at forums.novell.com.

Have you tried modprobe forcedeth and adding it to your ethernet
config in YaST?

Hello and thanks for responding

Have you tried modprobe forcedeth and adding it to your ethernet
config in YaST?

I had considered that as a problem and - thus - did the following (I have been collecting research from other areas as well):

**simba:/ # modprobe -l | grep force **
/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/drivers/input/joystick/iforce/iforce.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/drivers/net/forcedeth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/drivers/i2c/busses/i2c-nforce2.ko

simba:/ # lsmod | grep forcedeth
forcedeth 65416 0

simba:/ # modprobe -r forcedeth

simba:/ # modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0

simba:/ # /etc/init.d/network restart
Shutting down network interfaces:

I did “modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0” and “modprobe forcedeth”. Neither of them worked.

I got the troubleshooting tips from here:
nVidia nForce 680i motherboards - Page 2 - nV News Forums

I also tried the following:

  1. Place “options forcedeth msi = 0 msix=0” in /etc/modprobe.conf
  2. Modprobe -r forcedeth
  3. mop probe forcedeth

This did not work either.

Someone told me …

Worst case would be that you need to download a proprietary driver from NVidia, copy it over to your computer and install it. Unfortunately this often requires linking with your running kernel - so you’d also need build tools and the headers for your running kernel.

Is this true?

Unfortunately, I have an HPa6500f. It seems as though the chipset is defined as follows:
GPU/VPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7100

HP Pavilion a6500 Desktop PC series specifications - HP Home & Home Office Products
Chipset
a6535c-b / a6528p / a6512p-b / a6552f: Intel® G33 Express Chipset
**a6500f: nVidia GeForce 7100 nForce 630i **
a6518f: nVIDIA nForce 430
a6534f: nVidia nForce 430 Chipset
a6502f / a6547c-b / a6530f: nVIDIA nForce 430 Chipset

I have an **HP Pavilion a6500f machine ** (unfortunately) :frowning:

I also found the following discussion:
nVidia nForce 680i motherboards - Page 2 - nV News Forums
It talks about a bug in the bios of the software

I then went to this page:
NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

And downloaded (according to the entries):
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2.run which was created on: July 30, 2008

Could this solve the problem? I am somewhat hesitant to run this package as I don’t know whether or not it will trash the system altogether. The preference is to locate another forcedeth driver

On this page: Bug #117411 “nVidia 680i Ethernet is not working / Forcedeth Mod...” : Bugs : linux package : Ubuntu
Someone with UBUTU went to kernel 2.6.24.17.19 and found that it solved his problem but I am on Suse with a kernel version of 2.6.22.5-31. Also, his problem is with nforce 680i while mine is with 630i.

**QUESTION: Would running this “.run” file mess up the system beyond repair? If this ethernet thing does not work, what other options do I have for connecting to the internet? Can I get another ethernet card or something like that?
**

Hi
The file you downloaded is for the video card. Have you tried to
configure the ethernet via YaST and add the driver there?

Can you please also confirm the operating system, run the following
command;

cat /etc/SuSE-release

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks again for responding …

The file you downloaded is for the video card

Which files? I thought these were for the “forcedeth”?

Have you tried to configure the ethernet via YaST and add the driver there?

Is there a way to add the driver from there? Does one need eth0 to actually exist before the configuration will work? If I do the following:

–> ifup eth0
Interface eth0 is not available

–> ifdown eth0
Interface eth0 is not available

–> ifconfig -a
just shows the loopback address (lo) - nothting for eth0.

I have also noted the output of **lspci -nnvv **below.

Can you please also confirm the operating system, run the following
command;

I am working with Opensuse 10.3.

If there is way to configure this through YAST without eth0 existing, can you please share

TIA,
Casey

Hi
Can you see the card in YaST network devices (It may show up unknown)?
If so, one of the configuration tabs allows you to add the module.

Hello,

Thank you for responding

Sorry, I did not see your posts earlier.

This particular card was not added to the kernel until 2.6.25. A stock
openSUSE 10.3 kernel will never recognize it.

What can one do to have it recognized? Is there something I can download so that the card will be seen by Opensuse? Would a kernel upgrade from 2.6.22 to 2.6.25 do the trick? If so,how does one do this?

TIA for the hints

Hello again -

Above you mentioned that the card was not added until 2.6.25 - can you further elaborate on this? A driver currently exist for this card(?). I have downloaded what I thought was the latest version but it did not work…

TIA

Dear experts,
I am also having problems with an attansic eth card. (L1 Giga)
I can see it from Yast, but I cannot configure. When I go to Network Settings, I cannot edit it.
(unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present.
In the Hardware Information (from Yast) it says:
Drivers:
—Active: Yes
—modprobe: Yes
—modules
------modprobe atl1

My kernel version is 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae

lsmod| grep atl1 gives:
atl1 50316 0
mii 21888 1 atl1

ifconfig still only returns loopback lo.

Can somebody help me?
Best regards,
luiz

Hi,

Did you solve this problem? I am having the same problem, and it is driving me crazy. Please advise hoe to solve this problem.
