Opensuse desktop fails

Hello
I am a complete newbie to linux and opensuse and this is my first post here.

I have installed opensuse but find when I get to the desktop (not sure what this is called in linux) I see the background and a gnome. Nothing else.
Can anyone say what I need to do to rectify this please?

Many thanks
John

How did you install? I’m guessing a Gnome based CD???

Did you check the check sums of the file to be sure your download was correct? Instruction and check sums are on the download page.

Did you run the check media option on the install CD? To make sure the burn went ok.

You are definitely missing something.

Thanks for the answer
To make sure there was “no mistake” I purchased the DVD from the Linuxshop.

Do you have a radeon or nvidia viedeo card?
Also, when the system starts and you get the boot splash screen, press the esc key and check the boot messages for clues.

Thanks for your reply.
Sorry for my belated reply the email went into jink for some reason.

Do you have a radeon or nvidia viedeo card?

The card is a radeon 7000
I tried escape but no result

When did you install from the DVD? And more importantly did you read and follow the installation instructions in the PDF or openSUSE web site? Category:SDB:Installation - openSUSE

When did you install from the DVD?

I have installed several times now over the last few days.

And more importantly did you read and follow the installation instructions in the PDF or openSUSE web site?

No I havent seen that before.

Can I uninstall and start again?
Thank you
John

Category:SDB:Installation - openSUSE

Having looked at this once more yes I did follow this procedure.
Thanks
John

Yes but I ask that you first review the the installation instructions, either from the pdf on your installation DVD or from the web site.

Then ask all the questions here that you need answered.

Question did the prior installs yield the same results, ie, desktop fails?
If you right click your mouse over the blank desktop can you select “Open in Terminal”?

If yes does a terminal screen appear?

If yes, can you type in terminal

tail -n 30 /var/log/messages

then

tail -n 30 /var/log/warn

then cut and paste the output from each between html tags “code” and “/code”

These html tags code and /code are enclosed by brackets ] and no quotation marks.
] <- word code inside bracket
output from tail
] <- word /code inside bracket

Thanks.

Have you tried safe mode? Choose it from the boot menu.

Thank you for your help,

I have now discovered the comprehensive pdf help file on the install disc!

Looking through this I believe I have installed correctly.

If you right click your mouse over the blank desktop can you select “Open in Terminal”?

Unfortunately the mouse cursor does not appear.

Have you tried safe mode? Choose it from the boot menu.

Using the installed version when I try to login via failsafe mode it will not accept the password I entered.

If I try to use the live version on this machine I just get a blank screen.
However I have a much older Dell with a Server 2003 OS and the Live version works OK on this.

Maybe tell us about the hardware you are failing to install to then. It is real hard to look over your shoulder from here.

If you have managed to install 11.3 and are now having problems, look at this thread:
openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users

To get the pc to boot into terminal mode so you can install the radeon drivers, type a 3 at the boot screen and then enter.
You can login at the terminal as root and run yast to add the repos and install the drivers.

If you are having a problem installing, choose the safe mode option from the dvd boot menu.

It could be your DVD device isn’t reading the Linux DVD correctly. Pls post your hardware for this machine and test the media again.

But as Whych says we need for you to get to some sort of operating system.
When you see the Grub Menu list enter “E” to edit the menu and add “3” to the end of the line for booting openSUSE normally or failsafe mode.

OTOH, if you get to a terminal login screen and your password doesn’t work, caps/no caps, slow type, alternate password possibilities, etc. you may need to reinstall it again just to get the passwords correct.

Pls let us know when you get a terminal screen.

Thanks for all the replies, I will come back to this soon.
Regards
John

I am getting a new (old) machine tomorrow so I will try an install on that just to clarify the present situation.
This machine has Fedora installed but I believe I can also install Opensuse.
Thanks
John
