openSUSE can't find my wireless card (or it doesn't have the drivers for them)

Hi,

I cant get openSuse to find my wifi adapter or it does not have the driver installed.

My wifi adapter is the Realtek RTL8191SE 902.11b/g/n

I found a linux driver on the internet, but it asked me to run make in the console and when I did so it said that it couldn’t find make.

I’m not sure how to install make from openSuse without the internet (I’m using my windows partition).

You’ll need to install make and gcc.

You don’t need to be connected to the internet to do that; if you have the installation media still handy, you can get both of these packages from there. From the command line, you can do:

zypper in make gcc

as root … of you can go into the software manager section of YaST and install both using the GUI.

I installed make and run it but then got this error: make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2

try installing kernel-devel and kernel-headers

zypper in kernel-devel kernel-headers

You have to install de devel and source package of your kernel.

Most of this is gibberish for me. I don’t know how to run as root, except to use sudu followed by “zypper in make gcc”, but that doesn’t work very often, ie, I don’t get the password prompt and get some message that it’s an insufficient command. I installed something called make and something called gcc per your request, but have no idea what it is.

I have an HP dm3t. I do have internet, but the wireless card is not recognized. However, in Ubuntu, the wireless card worked just fine, so I don’t know why yours doesn’t. Especially since the Ubuntu iso is 8x’s smaller than yours. Please help me in plain english.

In plain English, you should start your own thread, not piggyback on one started
by someone else.

That new thread should be in the wireless forum, but before you post there, read
the first three sticky postings. They will tell you how to identify what
wireless card you have, and some of the rudimentary steps to debug why it
doesn’t work. I predict that either you have not installed the firmware, or that
your wireless switch is OFF, but you should read to find out how to check those
conditions.

Those packages you installed are used to compile C code (gcc) and the utility
needed to build programs or drivers (make).

Ok, I figured most of it out. I’ve installed make and gcc both via the install remove and running root by gnomesu, which told me it was aleady installed. I then ran the kernel command also. I rebooted. However, I still do not have wireless networks available.

there is no one here who can help you more than Larry…if i were you i
