Hey guys, i´m just really, really new in OpenSUSE, and i have a big question that is keeping me with afraid of installing OpenSUSE and lost Vista!!! I´ve already read tutorials and stuff, but i really don´t understand!
In that part of partitioning, what´s the best option so i can install OpenSUSE and i don´t lost vista?? Is there a option that really does that?
As you can imagine windows is the most popular OS out there. I don’t know by hearth which are the installation options available in OpenSuSE but at least two must exist and be handled properly:
Clean Install: Use the entire disk for OpenSuSE … yummy!
Install side by side with windows
Try searching for those sites that cover the installation process with screenshots and look at the disk setup part.
First, always backup your data before you start playing with any OS.
Second, defragment your hard drive before trying an install.
Third, the install should resize your windows partitions for you during
the install by default.
Good luck.

As he mentions, by default openSUSE will set itself up to boot up alongside with Windows. If you want to test out openSUSE you can also just use the liveCD’s. It wont be as responsive and fast as an install but they’re perfectly safe as they don’t install anything on your disk while allowing you to take a peak at openSUSE.
Since support for NTFS (filesystem Vista uses) isn’t mature yet, I strongly suggest resizing your windows partition from inside vista. As was already mentioned ALWAYS back up any data that you don’t want to loose. Here is a link with instructions on resizing partitions in Vista.
After you shrink your Vista partition just leave the hard drive space that you want to allocate to linux as unpartitioned space. Next just pop in your friendly SUSE linux install DVD and reboot. If you use the automatic setup option, SUSE will automatically give you the default partition setup using the unpartitioned space on your hard drive. Here is a link to the installation guide.
