I often hear non-openSUSE users comment about how [open]SUSE is heavily dependent on Mono. What parts of [open]SUSE are developed in Mono, and how heavily dependent on Mono is SUSE, if at all?
Checking with Yast software management, I notice that mono is not installed. So it must not be part of a standard install. And I seem to be getting along quite well without it.
Yeah, same here. I see no mono packages installed on my system. I’m just not sure why it’s assumed that SUSE is somehow dependent on Mono. Just today, apart from hearing it a couple times in the past, I read someone saying, 'If you want to develop for Mono or KDE, use opensuse". I can half way understand the KDE part, since it’s considered the ‘default’ desktop, but not the Mono part.
You have completely changed the topic.
Original topic: Is opensuse dependent on mono. Answer – no.
New topic: Is mono dependent on suse? I’m not sure, but it is my impression that mono was developed by Novell people for the suse project. So mono is probably better supported in suse and opensuse than elsewhere.
I see your point, I certainly could have worded things better. In the past I had heard comments implying Mono and openSUSE are tightly integrated, and SUSE relies on Mono. I guess I just lumped what I read today in with that.

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, Ximian was part of the same
company that owned openSUSE, and the guys calling the shots for SUSE
Linux came from Ximian. They had written a few key components in Mono,
and there were many issues with some of those components.
Then Novell got bought by Attachmate, the Ximian team was let go (and
later formed into Xamarin), and SUSE became its own parallel business to
Novell and NetIQ’s businesses.
A lot of people stopped paying attention to what was going on after Novell
acquired SUSE, and have continued to propagate incorrect information
about SUSE and openSUSE as a result.
SUSE is now owned by Micro Focus, a company based in the UK. A lot of
people who haven’t followed SUSE still think SUSE is owned by Novell, and
that hasn’t been the case since I was laid off from Novell when Attachmate
acquired them back in 2011.

No, mono isn’t dependent on SUSE. The former Ximian developers were let
go 4 years ago, and formed Xamarin, which is where Mono development now
takes place. Novell, SUSE, Attachmate, and Micro Focus have nothing to
do with mono.

Cool. That makes sense. Thank you.
