Opensuse 42.1 Freezes

I figure there might be a hardware issue, so I am posting this here. I run a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 series laptop with a solid state drive and the latest BIOS installed. I am running Opensuse Leap 42.1 x64 with kernel version 4.1.31-30-default, with an Intel Core i7 6500U CPU. When I am using my computer, every once in a while it will freeze completely and I need to force shutdown the laptop. I can boot it up fine again, but the same freezing error keeps occurring. No error messages pop up, no warning signs about an imminent freeze, it just happens. Any suggestions? This does not happen on my Dell 11in HDD computer running the same OS, version and all!

Offhand, no idea what might be causing this, but if you have a second
system on the network (seems you do), you might ssh into the problem
system and just tail /var/log/messages and dmesg (in separate terminals)
and see what happens when it’s locked up. The log might not get flushed
to disk (depending on the nature of the hang), but watching it as it logs
activity might provide some useful insight.

Hi
That’s a skylake CPU, not dual graphics?

  1. Try to login to a Virtual Console – this may take some time but, usually <Ctrl-Alt>F1 will respond after a while.
  2. Take a look at the current system processes with the CLI command ‘top’.
  3. Check to see if the Btrfs daemon is using 100% of the available CPU capacity or not.

Also the good old ram test is not to be discarded offhand.

You might try a newer kernel. The CPU is a Skylake, there have been issues with Skylakes on kernel 4.1

Sorry for the delay in my reply. Could I ask what the process is that you would recommend to update the kernel? Where should I obtain it? Via the repositories? Thanks again.
