Opensuse 15.5 slows down and freezes in use, goes nto a coma when idle for a while

I installed 15.5 on my new HP desktop. Booting is OK, but the computer seems to gradually slow down until it freezes. When left alone for a while, it goes into a coma: sometimes you can wake it, but it is faster to power down and reboot. I followed a similar problem on the Support page, but it stopped without really solving the problem.

It’s hard to guess what the problem is, without more information.

I installed 15.5 on a new Dell, and it has been fine. At first, it suspended after an idle period. But I didn’t want that, so I went into the power settings to disable suspending.

My previous desktop would sometimes slowdown. It only had 8G of memory, and when I ran a VM that consumed much of the free memory so it slowed down due to the swapping. My new Dell has 16G of memory, and I am not noticing any slowdown.

How much memory do you have? How may applications do you normally have running, and are they using most of the memory? What’s the output from:

free

I have 8Gb, which doesn’t sound like a lot to me. Here are the results from free, with very few applications running as noted:

It does not appear to be memory stressed.

Just booted up on my old computer with 15.3: much faster boot and response; Firefox, Thunderbird, Okular & Gimp open. Here are the results from free:

Another piece of information: With the new 15.5 computer, I think I hear hard drive operation a lot, even when I’m not doing anything. Also, I see that the Swap memory use is very different between the two machines.

As you can clearly see at the output, you are using the complete Swap (thats why you hear hard drive “noise” and see the system lockup…). Why your system starts to use the complete Swap before RAM needs to be investigated. This is no normal setting…
Additionally you need to monitor which process eats up RAM and Swap.

Hmm, I misread that. It does appear memory stressed.

The output was originally posted without the preformatted tags. Now that it is properly formatted, the heavy swap use is obvious.

This illustrates why we always want output to be show with the preformat tags.

How do I monitor what’s using up the ram? or what’s running?

By the way, my wife’s new 15.5 computer has some of the same problem, but not as severe. Perhaps that is because of what software she uses or doesn’t use.

I guess “top” will show what’s eating up your ram

You may give it a try. If the OOM killer kicks in add more RAM.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the Btrfs automatic snapshots. Are you using Btrfs?

Thanks to all of you for your ideas. I have been slow to respond because we have been very busy and the last three times I tried to respond with information about my system, it froze, and I had to shut down with the on-off switch. Twice, when I booted afterwards, it was still frozen!

I hope to get back before too long with more information and results.

I just did this, and it seems to have helped some immediately. Will keep you posted on whether it keeps on or goes back to the coma problem.

Is your system on a Hard Disk (rotating rust). If so that might be the reason - something changed in the kernel and now inactive hard drives are powered off if idle too long.
I see that on all my rotating rust drives lately.
It takes 45 seconds for them to come back to life. Feels like hours.

It is not related to powering off from drives. As easily can be seen at the terminal output, nearly all RAM and the complete Swap get filled. That is why the system freezes…

Even when the TO does not run any app, Swap and RAM is full…

Yes, this is a hard drive. I guess I don’t yet completely trust flash drives.

Also, on boot the system ignores the keyboard. I can’t select a boot option or command line.
