I’m running OpenSUSE 15.5 under VMware Workstation Pro 16.2.5. After updating to kernel 5.14.21-150500.55.39.1 the guest system no longer boots. I have both the latest vmmouse and video driver installed in the guest system. This could very well be a problem in Workstation Pro. I’m posting it here because I’ve had Pro 16.2.5 running for some time now and haven’t had any problems with kernels up to 150500.55.36.1. I would like ask whether anyone knows what’s going on?
There is an issue being looked into - I ran into this on Workstation 17.5 myself and have a bug in bugzilla for it.
The workaround for the time being is to turn of accelerated graphics in the VM’s configuration.
If you don’t have it turned on, then what you’re seeing is something else - but the kernel versions you describe match what I saw in my testing.

I originally thought it was an Xorg issue, but discovered through testing with input from those helping on the bug that both Xorg and Wayland have the issue.
