Hi there, I just purchased a new “HTC 10” Smartphone and I am not able to transfer files between it and my PC. The new phone came with a USB type C cable and I understand that the software and/or drivers might be different from a “standard” USB cable. Have updates for this version ceased or is there one that I have missed that will handle the USB C???
Thanks,
-Chuck
It could be that the new mobile telephone has USB version 3.1 behind the USB type C socket.
You do not mention which USB version your 13.2 system is using.
Theoretically devices with USB version 3.1 are backward compatible with USB version 3.0 and version 2.0 but, there may be compatibility issues, such as:
-
USB Type-C:
The 24-pin double-sided connector provides four power-ground pairs, two differential pairs for USB 2.0 data bus (though only one pair is implemented in a Type-C cable) . . .

It may be that, the USB type C cable supplied with your mobile telephone is not a “Full-featured” cable. If your 13.2 system only supports USB version 2.0 (possibly also an issue with USB version 3.0 hardware) then, you may have to purchase an active “Full-featured USB 3.1 and 2.0 Type-C” cable (has a chip with an ID function).
*Alllllllrighty now… *Sorry I have not responded sooner -but- I’m an old fart(70) with vascular dementia and 3 computers, a smartphone(smater than me) and a dog(also smarter than me). Each tries to use up my time… and then there is my wife.
Now then, with the funnies out of the way… I have a new HP i7 that has both USB 2 and 3. The phone is also new. A brand new HTCM10. (yeah they don’t include the ‘M’ but I do). Anyway, my previous ‘Smartphone’ was also an HTC… the ReZound(almost 5 yrs old). The old one is USB 2 only and it connected to my 'puters just fine and I was able to look at all the dirs -and- make changes -and- transfer files. With this new one I can not.
Looks like changes have been made to both Android and openSuSE that I am NOT up with. That is the main reason I was inquiring here. I am not sure about the 3.0 versus 3.1 … yet. I will investigate that. However, I do believe that the “best” thing in the world would be for me to “UpGrade” to the new “Leap”. I been dragging my feet on that cause of VMware. I had version 10 and it appeared that it was NOT gona work with Leap. In fact I “think” I tried it and it didn’t. Well I now have the “latest” VMware version 12 installed.
Now my two i7’s are both running dual boot… with Windows 10 and openSuSE 13.2. Is there any chance of just doing an UpDate to Leap and NOT destroying my setups??
Thanks,
-Chuck
Does it work in W10? If so, not a hardware (cable) problem, which leaves a kernel upgrade as the most probable solution. Upgrading to LEAP might be the answer then.
Duhhhh… stupid me. I did not think to check it on Windows 10. But that doesn’t matter cause I am mostly interested in it working on Linux. I am now in the process of UpGrading my Linux from 13.2 to Leap 42.1.
Thanks,
-Chuck
