openSUSE 13.2 fglrx64 for AMD 890GX/ATI RS880/Radeon HD 4290?

I’m running openSUSE 13.2 x86/64 Gnome 3.14.3 on a Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 mainboard w/ AMD 890GX / ATI Radeon HD 4290

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A2
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS880 [Radeon [b]HD 4290] [1002:9714]
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device [1043:8454]
Kernel driver in use: radeon

I’ve tried some times to get fglrx running on this machine without success.

This install link for AMD FGLRX LEGACY for AMD legacy radeon hd2xxx to hd4xxx chipset (rs880) series does not contain instructions for openSUSE 13.2. http://geeko.ioda.net/mirror/amd-fglrx-legacy/raw-src/amd-ati-fglrx64-legacy.ymp

Another install link http://opensuse-community.org/amd64.ymp
say: This repository and drivers are for radeon hd5xxx chipset and above only. if you have a radeon from series hd2xxx to hd4xxx use the other repository http://geeko.ioda.net/mirror/amd-fglx-legacy

But the latter just respond: “The requested URL was not found on this server.”

So isn’t there available any fglrx that support this legacy(?) ATI graphical card?

Added the community ATI repo through Yast:

fglrx doesn’t support a HD 4290, only HD 5000 and up.

And the fglrx legacy driver doesn’t work on any recent openSUSE release (since 12.3 IIRC), because of the too new Xorg and kernel.

So you’re stuck with radeon, which should work well though.

If you have any problem with radeon, you’d better ask about that problem specifically.

I have no spesific issues with radeon, but I think the fglrx support ended rather early already after openSUSE 12.3.
Looks like we get better LTS from Nvidia drivers for their gpu’s.

Not after, but before 12.3.

OTOH, AMD started to support (and did/does actively support) the open source driver development much earlier.
Even with certain cards supported by fglrx, the open source radeon driver shows better performance (also in 3D) in some benchmarks.

Whereas it is a luck game whether nouveau works at all…
