When I started my computer this morning all I get is the log in screen, If I try log in as user the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds then reopens with the login screen.
If I log in as Root it starts as normal in root user.
Hi,
your problem description possibly needs a little bit more detail:
You could possibly mention from which OS version the upgrade was applied.
Or, was it a 13.2 patch/update?
Seems to be an issue with protections and/or policies.

With the root user you could check if the user’s home directory exists and is owned by that user.
Repeat for all the other users on the machine.

With the root user, using YaST check the machine’s security policy. If the machine’s current security policy is not “simple/easy” then, it’s possible that the required changes to the user’s home directories have not been executed.

Are you a system administrator?
Please mention the following information (usually available from the KDE Info-Centre on the User Desktop)
OS version: (for example: Linux 3.16.7-35-desktop openSUSE 13.2 (Harlequin) (x86_64))
KDE Platform-Version: (for example: 4.14.9)
upgrade/update would have been applied as per usual from software update utility I.E. i just accepted and installed whichever patches are sent through automatically. I see from my list of repositories I had a repo for 42.1 added This must have happened yesterday when I installed nodejs possibly the cause of the problem
I have removed that repo, uninstalled nodejs and run **zypper dup **has not helped.
Not sure how to check security policy, If I look at User and Group management in Yast, nothing jumps out at me as being out of place, and file permissions are set to Easy, however I have limited knowledge here, so a bit more direction for what to look for will help.
I am System admin. If I log in as root everything works as normal, User directory is accessible under home and files are usable.
OS version: Linux 3.16.7-35-desktop openSUSE 13.2 (Harlequin) (x86_64) KDE Platform-Version: 4.14.9
Since you can login as root,
You should do so and open
YAST > Security and Users > User and Group Management
Within that,
You should find your normal User account and when you click “Edit” should see its settings
in particular, is the checkbox “Disable User Login” checked?
You can reset the password. Maybe you’re not typing it in correctly?
The Default Group should be set to “users” unless there is a special reason to set differently
After the above, save, reboot and try logging in again.
BTW -
Nodejs should not have affected your existing other issues. AFAIK nodejs is not used regularly or in any significant way by default.
You shouldn’t need to install a special repo for nodejs, it’s in the main repo.
Although other distros mix “upgrade” and “update” or define differently, here in openSUSE we “update” our existing systems regularly to download and install improvements and patches, and consider “upgrading” to a new major version or re-install only infrequently.
No, If I enter my user name and press enter It returns “Login Incorrect” does not even prompt for password
If I enter user name as Root it also returns “login Incorrect” same her , no prompt for password.
If I Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to previous Graphic interface, startup stalls in the startup sequence, the last successful module to start is “wicked DHCPv6 Supplicant Service” then nothing.
If the Console logins are broken then, the only solution is to boot the 13.2 Distro-DVD and use the system repair facility to mount the hard-drive and repair /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
