openSUSE 13.1 Xfce with graphics card VIA P4M800 Pro gives only very low resolution (480x640)

I installed openSUSE 13.1 Xfce on a system previously used for Windows XP, which used a screen of 1024x768. The system has a VIA P4M800 Pro graphics card. Starting an Xfce session I only get the low resolution of 480x640. In the configuration screen this is the only option I have. I tried installing the package xf86-video-openchrome, but then I get on the screen a message that there is no signal. I also found this package version 3.3 in the Build service and installed it together with newer X11:xorg software, but had the same problem. Uninstalling only the packagexf86-video-openchrome brings me back to a display with low resolution. I am looking for suggestions.

I’m not at all familiar with this legacy hardware, but from your account it appears that a basic framebuffer driver is active. You could examine /var/log/Xorg.0.log to confirm this.

You might try installing the ‘xorg-x11-driver-video-openchrome’ graphics driver package. (I haven’t examined the contents to compare any differences with the package you referred to, but here is an interesting thread discussing the openchrome driver albeit with an earlier version of openSUSE.) Unfortunately, I can’t offer further advice with this.
