Downloaded openSUSE 13.1 RC1 (Live KDE 32 bit) today to test it out and got an error message during boot up:
Failed to mount RW Filesystem
rebootException : reboot in 120 sec …
Actual screenshot can be found here
The error message is encountered both when trying to go into LiveCD and Installation mode.
Done the following to confirm that correct steps are taken:
- Download ISO
- Verified that MD5sum is correct.
- Transferred ISO to usb using steps mentioned in SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE
- Debian using dd and Win7 using imagewriter
Downloaded openSUSE 12.3 and everything works fine, therefore usb thumbdrive and thinkpad is okay.
As wolfi323 mentioned, this is a known problem.
If you burn the live image to a DVD, you will be fine. This is explicitly a USB problem.
If you partition and format your USB as a FAT file system, and then use the “live-fat-stick” script to build the USB, you will be fine. The 64-bit live USB is also fine.
I’m thinking aloud now. I suspect the fatal mistake (of developers) was to use “parted” to add the hybrid partition. In my experience, “parted” does not like an isohybrid image on a USB. Using a scripted “fdisk” might have worked. (I should perhaps add that comment to the bug discussion).
It is listed as resolved.
I won’t count it as really resolved until I try it with RC2 and confirm that it works.
Offtopic: I not announced by email when new reply are in threads (I subscribe instantly, by email). Why?

Don’t count on RC2: on the past, RC2 was internal, they did not release
it. Unless they changed the policy recently.

At least the past two cycles (12.2 and 12.3) included a public RC2 release, and
one is scheduled for October 31 for 13.1. I don’t remember about 12.1, but I
think it had RC2 as well. AFAIK, there will be an RC2 release for the forseeable
future.
As RC2 is only 8 days before Gold Master, one needs to report bugs quickly for
them to be fixed before the final release. The GM release is the code that is
put into the final ISOs.
There are several bugs that were not fixed in RC1, and need testing.
841426, 841392, 839071 – probably others, but those are the ones that I am most familiar with.

Ha! It takes me about two days to download an iso…

Update :
With RC2, I am able to at least boot into the KDE LiveCD.
There is still an error message saying that I do not have sufficient space in the filesystem (liveCD?).
Anyway, am very busy these few days so couldn’t install and feedback.
