I didn’t ask this question BEFORE trying it, cause I didn’t want to embarrass myself. So now… with great shame I must ask a different question… BEFORE I make things worse.
I added two lines to my fstab … at the bottom … to try to point to my “other” computer. Yes, yes I know it was stupid -but- my reasoning at the time made sense … to me:shame:. Now it will NOT boot at all in “Normal” mode and in “Emergency” mode it prints out the welcome -and- what to do AFTER you sign in -BUT- it never gives me a logon.
Any idea how I can either reboot that machine in a “safe” mode in order to fix it?? -OR- get a “logon” for Emergency mode??
We all make mistakes … mine just happen to be really, really stupid!!
Thanks,
-Chuck
Hi
Boot from a live cd and mount the partition and manually edit. I found the openSUSE 13.1 rescue cd on a usb device perfect for this sort of thing…
Thanks Malcolm… I’ll give that a try … I’ll probably have to download a live CD and create one cause I’ve been bad and not creating them every release. -And- I just got this one installed on my contrary Windows 8 machine… You remember that one?:shame:? Well, I finally got it up and running … dual booting … operating as normal … -BUT- I could not access my two Data HD’s over on my other machine. I could see them in Dolphin but could not access them. They are Windows drives that I was trying to access through Samba -but- (that word again) when I clicked on the drive folders it asked for a Username and a Password. That’s cool… I have them setup -but- (that word again) when I entered the “correct” Username and Password … it rejected me!!
Same thing happened on my “other” puter when I tried to access those same drives through Samba -but- (I won’t say it again) I can access them “normally” cause they are mounted in my fstab. Soooooo… my reasoning was should work on the “new” machine too… I’ll just add them to the fstab … NOT SO!! I never expected it to be this bad. Thought that at worst I would get some messages about you can’t do that and then it would still boot up and I would remove them… IF I had to. Well, definitely looks like I am going to have to remove them. Just hope I don’t screw up the rest of the machine try to correct this mistake.
That was my dumb reasoning. Right now I’m going with my wife to breakfast and then I’ll get the “Live CD”. In fact I’ll start the download before we leave.
Thanks again Malcolm … for your wisdom,
-Chuck
Well, as luck would have it… Live 13.1 KDE DVD’s are no longer available. I have a 12.3 live one… hopefully that will work.
I have never seen samba work right out of the box even for a simple pier to pier. I always have had to fiddle with it. I use
http://swerdna.dyndns.org/suselanprimer.html
It usually get me there
Allllllrighty now… I found one. What?? A 13.1 Live x86_64 DVD at:
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/opensuse/opensuse/distribution/13.1/iso/
So IF anyone else needs one… that is where they can be found.

[size=5]*WHAHOOOOOO!! [size=3]And many, many, many Thanks to you Malcolm. The Live DVD did the trick. I won’t have to go thru all that Win8 setup agony again.
Thanks,
-Chuck
And gogalthorp … I will check out that item you mentioned concerning Samba. Thanks to you also.
