OpenSUSE 13.1 Evergreen or Open SUSE 13.2?

Hi, I am planning to install Opensuse but I don’t know which version to install the evergreen 13.1 or 13.2 latest? I cannot download 4.7Gb in 3hrsso It will take me about 1-3 days to download it. I don’t know if this is the right forum section to ask this question.

After installing 13.1 from the DVD, now there will be a lot of accumulated online updates to apply. There will be updates to apply for 13.2 but not as many. The Evergreen repo for 13.1 is scheduled for July, so until then you would be installing and running standard/stable 13.1.

The network CD installation method (i.e. small initial downloaded starter system) overall could reduce the amount of downloading as the DVD contains much more software than you might need, and the network/online method downloads and installs the latest package versions immediately.

Consider which file system you intend to use for the root partition. For 13.1, the default is ext4, whereas 13.2’s default is Btrfs set up with Snapper for automatic snapshots whenever you use YaST for system admin tasks e.g. software updates, and/or zypper commands (software management). Btrfs with snapshotting will need larger partitions. You can obviously override the defaults in the installer, and Btrfs can be deployed with snapshotting disabled.

If Btrfs is really, really needed I would install 13.2 for the newer versions of utilities and snapshot management software (Snapper).

I am running 13.2 on three machines (Desktop, Media/File/Print Server, Web and Cloud Server) without a hiccup. I have even run it successfully from Dual Boot on my Lenovo G580 notebook.

As an alternative to downloading and burning a CD/DVD, there are Linux User Groups all over the place and most have copies of Linux made up and aree more than willing to burn a copy for you. Another way is to check out the latests LInux magazines for sale at your local bookstore or news stand. Most contain Linux distros on DVD and also some good install tips inside and I prefer to read Linux Format and Linux Pro.

Last, and best choice (IMO) is to order the full DVD with documentation from the originator such as this boxed set of OpenSUSE - https://en.opensuse.org/Buy_openSUSE due to what comes with it.

Good luck with your choice and let us know how it worked out.
