-=WELCOME=- new poster, but you need to tell us more…

i assume you meant to type “error 18 when trying to install grub into
the MBR”

but tell us exactly what the error said…if you have to take a photo
of it and post it to paste.opensuse.org and then put the URL back to
this thread…

and, were you trying to install openSUSE 12.1 into a completely empty
hard drive, or did it already have some other operating system on the
machine? was that Ubuntu, or openSUSE 11.4, or Windows, or OSX or or or…

or are you installing into a RAID array…

and, did you want to install gurb into the MBR or did you want to put it
onto the second drive, or the fourth partion of the first drive–but the
install 'insisted on going into the MBR and then failed?

take a photo of the install page that looks kinda like this
https://plus.google.com/photos/107564133608385811033/albums/5581711369693731457/5581714908511814978?banner=pwa
it show what you have asked the installer to do in the way of
partitioning, grub placement, etc…just before you press the install
button at the bottom…

is this a rack mounted blade server in a distant hosting facility or is
it a laptop…

really: it is not possible to help you with so little information…

So with your minimal request, I am not sure if you only want to know what error 18 means or just what problem you are trying to report: Grub Errors reported by the Stage 2, Error 18 : Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS: This error is returned when a read is attempted at a linear block address beyond the end of the BIOS translated area. This generally happens if your disk is larger than the BIOS can handle (512MB for (E)IDE disks on older machines or larger than 8GB in general). If this is an old computer, then a BIOS update is in order. If you just got the error during the install, but otherwise it works OK, then there is nothing to worry about. If you get this error when you cover your head with aluminum foil, perhaps you need to see a Doctor.

Thank You,
