I am new to OS12.3. I have a largish collection of music files in ogg, mp3 and flac form, all stored in a folder hierarchy under the top folder ‘Music’. RythmBox will scan import/add the ogg files to the library when I ask it to import folders from ‘Music’, but as far as I can see ignores the flac and mp3 files. I have set it up to watch for new files below my ‘Music’ folder where everything is, but it still won’t recognise and import them.
What do I need to do to get RythmBox to handle flac and mp3 music files?
Maybe you are missing the codecs?
For mp3 you need either the package “gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3” (available in the non-oss repo) or “gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly-orig-addon” (from Packman).
For flac it’s “gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good”.

one good Multimedia setup guide for openSUSE 12.3 https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/caf4926/opensuse-12-3-multi-media-restricted-format-installation-guide-126/
Well, I’ve done that (using the command-line approach in 13.3), and now mp3 are okay, but I still can’t import flac files in Rythmbox, neither individually nor by folder. The Install Software tool shows that the flac codec seems to have been installed (flac, libflac6 etc).
From the file manager (Files) the flac files will open and play in Totem and Rythmbox, so the codecs seem to be in place, if that helps.
Totem uses gstreamer 1.0, so that doesn’t prove anything. But yes, if you can open them from the file manager with Rhythmbox the codecs are ok of course.
Strange then that you can’t open them from within Rhythmbox as well.
Sorry, I have no idea why this could be. I don’t even use Rhythmbox myself.
Do they play with “gst-launch-0.10”? What does “gst-typefind-0.10” say about those files?
Do you really have “libflac6” installed? I only have “libFLAC8” on my 12.3 system, maybe you’re missing that?

I meant libflac++6 (whatever that is), but libflac8 is also installed. Anyhow, flac support is supposed to be installed as part of OpenSuse by default, isn’t it?
The problem comes down to why RythmBox won’t import flac files. Can any other Gnome users import flac files into Rythmbox?
Later: Hold the horses! I have now searched through the RythmBox library carefully, and it appears that it has imported and added many (but not all) of my flac files. Given that they are all under one folder (“Music/…/flac”) I am still puzzled, because I can’t import the missing ones individually either. They remain greyed out in the import pane.

Rythmbox does import and play flac on my machine.
Sample flac obtained here :- http://download.linnrecords.com/test/flac/tone24bit.aspx
