openSUSE 12.3 RC1 - only failsafe starts KDE

If I boot with…

    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.7.6-1.2-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AAJS-60M0A0_WD-WMAV2H247069-part1 video=1024x768 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AAJS-60M0A0_WD-WMAV2H247069-part3 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x317

…it begins displaying the KDE startup screen then displays some broken green diagonal lines and the computer locks up. If I boot with the “failsafe” choice…

    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.7.6-1.2-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD3200AAJS-60M0A0_WD-WMAV2H247069-part1 showopts apm=off noresume edd=off powersaved=off nohz=off highres=off processor.max_cstate=1 nomodeset x11failsafe vga=0x317

…KDE starts normally. Yes I have Nvidia graphics, but nouveau has worked acceptably in 12.2. Any suggestions where I should start the problem diagnosis?

Try editing “$HOME/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc”

In the section under “[Compositing]” check for a line beginning “Enabled=”, and set that to “Enabled=false”. You can add that line if it is not already there.

Then try again with nouveau and normal booting.

That changes forces desktop effects to OFF.

I have an older system with radeon graphics, where I needed to do that with Beta1, though with RC1 I could actually login to KDE and set desktop effects of with “Configure Desktop”.

My system with nvidia graphics is doing reasonably well with nouvea - on balance, I think it is better than in earlier versions.

Might help if you mention which NVIDIA card/chip. Also sounds like you need to post a Bugzilla with that info.

Thanks for the quick response. GeForce 6100 nForce 430. It has worked acceptably well with nouveau on this computer booting 12.2

It was already set to “false”. Probably because I had already disabled effects after booting the “failsafe” option.

Adding “nomodeset” to the “kernel” line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file solved the problem. Using grub instead of grub2 makes experimenting simpler.

Assuming you still do not have the nouveau driver working with 12.3 RC1, my guess is the problem is with the 3.7.x kernel that comes with 12.3 RC1. I have a thread here https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/tumbleweed/482510-3-7-2-18-kernel-broken-nvidia-fx5200-latest-tumbleweed-kernel.html on the problem. While the thread is a Tumbleweed thread, the two bug reports I wrote

were on openSUSE-12.3 RC1 and on the 3.7.x kernel.

Having typed the above, I note my bug report was on an NV34 graphic device (FX5200) while your GeForce 6100 is in the NV4x series … so this could be a different problem ? From the ‘man nouveau’ page for supported drivers:
