You might want to try one of the Live Media options
See how it works before installing

I also recommend the live cd test to be sure (sometimes the same model
has different chips inside esp. for Wlan).

My wife had this model Asus K50ij before I replaced it a week ago with a
ThinkPad Edge 530 and it (the K50ij) worked with 11.4, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3
without any further modification - just install and run it.
Of course if you want to dual boot with windows you should first reduce
the size of your windows partition to make place for the linux install.

PC: oS 12.3 x86_64 | i7-2600@3.40GHz | 16GB | KDE 4.10 | GTX 650 Ti
ThinkPad E320: oS 12.3 x86_64 | i3@2.30GHz | 8GB | KDE 4.10 | HD 3000

Hi Martin.

Many thanks for this info. It is indeed valuable info. Was the Wlan also
easy to get going ?.

The wlan in that machine was an Atheros AR9285 which worked out of the
box with the athk (I think athk9) driver which was automatically
installed by the openSUSE setup.
You can check in your existing Windows by looking in the device manager
if you have the same.

Fine Martin. The machine here has the very same Atheros as you had.
Thanks for the info

And create at least an image backup so that you can restore Windows from
scratch if things go badly.

Then stop, and wait till you do have the disk. If you want to know why I
say so, read

not help him.

Do you mean, that it’s best to get a new HDD for the linux install ?.

Or do you mean, that I need a HDD to do the backup of the VISTA ?.

At the present I make backup DVD’s. After I’ll make backup to a 2Tb
drive I have on another opensuse computer, and this will be made with
Macrium Reflect.

BTW, thanks for the link I’ll read more carefully.

I say that you get whatever you need to restore the machine to working
condition from the point that the contents of the HD are broken beyond
repair, by whatever means you prefer. I also say not to proceed with
Linux installation until you have that safeguard.

No joking.

If booting from a liveDVD or liveUSB stick to test, note than openSUSE-12.3 has a bug in its networking. An easy way to address this bug is to send (with root permissions in a konsole/bash-shell) the command:

systemctl start network.service

There are also other methods that can be used to enable the service.
