openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 3

Hi
I note your version of inxi is old, I have an updated version here;
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=home:malcolmlewis:Gnome&package=inxi

Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Kernel 3.0.13-0.27-default

CPU Intel i5 CPU M520@2.40GHz | Intel Arrandale GPU

I downloaded the M3 DVD and did a 32-bit install into a real test partition (not a VM) using the procedure that I wrote up for a 12.1 install here:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/how-faq-forums/unreviewed-how-faq/472463-how-kde-3-5-12-1-a.html

I used the Factory (instead of 12.1) repos for “…KDE:/KDE3:/ …” and “… Hal-enabled …” instead, of course. All else the same, including essential package selection. Selected/used (legacy) Grub instead of Grub2, to avoid the known problem with M3.

Everything seems to work normally. DVDs and USB Thumb flashes are recognized when inserted, Firefox browser and K3b work, as does (g)Mplayer for MP3’s and .MOVs, and I was even able to get Catalyst 12.3 working, albeit with a couple of problems; these should go away as soon as Catalyst install routine catches up with kernel 3.3x.

Overall Impression: very smooth, given that it’s only M3.

I tryed to install suse 12.2 M3, on my Dell latitude E6510(0001)

Thanks Larry. I was not planning on doing clean install on the seperate
disk 12.2 is on. Instead I have been able to free up my wifes older
machine (Win XP). I’m going to replace the disk on it, then clean
install 12.2 MS3 there. After its up I’ll clean off the disk on this
system.

Is the patch for the Nvidia driver need on a 12.1 system?

I need to figure out what graphic card she has, I’m sure it is on board
the motherboard.

Thanks again.

Patches for the Nvidia driver are based on the kernel version, not the openSUSE
release. Their distributed .run file will install “out of the box” if you use
kernel 3.1.X. In addition, there is a repo that contains the driver. For kernels
3.3+, the .run file needs to be patched for the Nvidia driver to build.

Any body that can’t get the full desktop effects on the KDE desktop.

zypper in mesa

and you should be good to go
for some reason that package is missing from the KDE live image

How large is that package? It may have been eliminated to get under the 700 MB
limit for a CD.

That would be a large chunk of the available room on the CD.

Is Mesa actually needed to complete the install?

That’s what I did. I used boot.local, because boot.after does not exist at my system.
Now it works.
Thanks.

3. The screen is set to “640x480”, but some portions are off the screen.
The texts/images are over-sized. The Desktop Holder View (I cannot
recall the proper name) occupies nearly the entire screen, with about 1"
space from the edges of the screen and the KDE taskbar, instead of
inside the top left quadrant.
This cannot be reconfigured through “KDE System Settings”. It should
be “1680x1050”. But this time around there is no pinkish shadows or
whatever. The fonts are nice and clean; whether this is so “as is” or
because of my tinkering, I am not certain.
4. The virtual-desktop switching cannot be reconfigured (I’d like to
use Alt-1, Alt-2, etc.; a hold-over from the “wm2” window manager and I
try to have a similar setting for Fluxbox, Openbox, Awesome.)
5.In YaST2, I found out that there’s the need for a double-click on a
item, say “Hardware” in a left frame to have corresponding items, like
“Printer”, in the right frame.
6. The “PackageKit” is getting harder to kill; at least, I had a bit
more difficulty. I notice that there are a few more “PackageKit”
components. I would not like my system to grab a huge amount of resource
to to do its things right off the bat. I would like to manage updating
when I want to. It’s a inconsiderate pig on openSUSE.
7. YaST2 > System > System Services: enabled “xfs” (I feel this may
improve appearance of some fonts) and “gpm”. I notices that “ntp” was
not enabled. Is this service turned on automatically in openSUSE?
8. Repos (apart from auto-configured ones; perhaps change these to
‘factory’ or such?):
Packman factory
M17N factory (just to make sure that some IMEs do work)
/X11: windowmanagers (for “Fluxbox”, which for me provides a nice middle
ground between stark minimalism and kitchen-sink extravaganza)
/home: “namtrac” factory (for Joe Schilling’s tools)
/home: “toganm” factory (for “awesome” window manager; I could not
install it: “libxcb-atom” was missing. He has done an excellent
work of keeping track of needed packages. I’m sure he’ll fix it.)
9. YaST2 > Software > Software Management: the “Repositories View” does
not work. On the left-hand side, there’s “Secondary Filters” something;
there’s no way to select a particular repo. On the right, There is a
listing of packages (perhaps of all packages?).

All in all, the system is unusable (well, I don’t like to use it)
because of the screen/graphics issue. But now back in openSUSE 12.1, I
have just read a post about editing ‘grub.cfg’: “640x480” ->
“1680x1050”. I hope that works for me.

I made the change. The result is not quite what I expected:
the screen is now “1920x1440”. Of course, this cannot be reconfigured.
The taskbar in Fluxbox is now hidden off the screen.

I installed mine from the DVD & all is well here.
Got all the multimedia stuff from the Tumbleweed, no probs there everything there works right too.
The only problem I had was that the KDE notification sounds didn’t work. That was an easy fix though, turned out the sound files were mislabeled.
If it stays this way maybe… just maybe release will be on time.

For me, installing Mesa resolve the desktop effects issue for my Intel card. I found that Mesa had not been installed when searching i915 in the Yast Software manager.

I note same problem on openSUSE-12.2 beta1. I also believe this to be a duplicate of this bug report: Access Denied
