OpenSuSe 12.2 install DVD freeze

I’m trying to install the latest DVD (seems to be 12.2 at install screen) for PC x86 and x64. But some strange behavior happens, even when you choose to try de install media, or just try to install: after 99% from Kernel loading, by using the graphical interface, screen split black, came back to color, and freeze. Nothing can be done, just power off/reset.

When trying the “text” installer, seems to froze at “ud” line, and nothing else.

The system is configured as follows:

PC Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz (socket 775)
Mother board Intel D102ggc2 (ATI video onboard, network, sound as well)
2 GB Ram DDR2 Kingston
HD Ide 120Gb
DVD-RW LG Sata
Nvidia GeForce 8500GT XFX (pci-e).

PS: i have trying using the onboard video, and the Nvidia too. At the same points, it fails (does not seems to be the video by him self).

Thanks in advice.

did you check the downloaded iso with md5sum, and burn high quality disk
at slow speed and then check the install disk at first green screen like
this: http://tinyurl.com/3qde66h ??

if the disk checks ok, you may need to add nomodeset as a boot option on
that first green screen, after you have finished the installation media
check, see how here http://tinyurl.com/23mgej6

by the way, the latest is 12.1

OK: both m5 checks and matches. Nothing is wrong with DVD media disc.

Now, about “nomodeset”, I dont’t have tried, but am afraid it will not works. As I have told, just after checking media (trully, just after loading kernel data), the screen splits very fast to black, and the background image from installer cames again, with no entry option, and nothing else to do.

If i can set this option before some option be invoked, maybe it works. Now, if it requires some data to have been already saved on computer, it will not work.

Anyway, i will try it again latter.

Thank you.

i’m not sure i understand…are you saying that when you boot from the
disk it never gets to a screen which looks like any these (and therefore
it never gives you a chance to type in nomodeset??)

http://en.opensuse.org/File:Nomodeset-example.jpg

if that is true, then you also don’t have the chance to select “Check
Installation Media”, right? and therefore can’t actually say “Nothing is
wrong with DVD media disc.” right?

or are you saying you have the opportunity to type in nomodeset but
will not because you know it won’t work??? if that is the case then i
can not try to help you further…

Nothing ventured is nothing gained. Try ‘nomodeset’. It sends instructions for the kernal load to not use KMS (kernel mode setting).

Also try the safe settings install.

OK, let’s plain the things (it seems to be a disagreement at my words). Let’s take DVD boot as scenario, for the related system detailed at original post, and then, we take a look at your two notes:

1 - Your pointed screen shots obviously are reached, so, there is absolutely no one problem related with the media recorded at DVD disc, as i have said before (md5 checks OK, to both architectures). Forget this focus.

2 - I guess we reached your “or” flag. As i have suspected, “nomodeset” does not work (at least, for this system i’m trying to install on), and the behavior continues the same.

Take a look at future post, answered to oldcpu user.

Hi there,

I follow your instructions, but even then, it fails. I got some screenshots, when trying safe mode and when trying normal mode, but with text gui. Maybe latter i will put the images at some url, and repost it here. As well as a video from it all. But, by now, here is my updated report.

When running Kernel at safe mode, the check media/install fails just after reaching the 99% of loading disc data, and it breaks at the following line, from the captured screen:

“[0.968067] pci 0000:00:13:0 OHCI : BIOS handoff failed (BIOS bug?) ffffffff”

When runnig Kernel at normal mode (defaults), but changing to use “text mode” interface, it crashes saying the follows:

“>>>> OpenSUSE installation program v3.5.15 (c) 1996-2011 SUSE Linux Products Gmb <<<<
Starting udev…”

Adding the “nomodeset” changes nothing, in any case.

That’s all.

Any helpfull info will be very appreciate.

Thank you.

maybe check at Intel site for an updated BIOS for your board…

if there is not one, i guess your next stop would be to log a bug…

or you could log the bug first and see if a dev suggests a BIOS upgrade…

hmmmmmm, seems you are not the first to face problems with that board,

I am not close to a linux pc now. When booting the dvd at the boot menu, when you press F5 (?) , is there a systemV selection there ? (or a similiar labelled selection)? If so did you try that ?

Now I know you believe your dvd is good, but still we have to ask: did you burn to a +R or -R (not an RW) at slowest speed your burner allows. I ask this because just because a single media check passes does not guarantee media is good.

You have me confused were have you got your dvd for 12.2?

The install from the last few days live CDs fail so I suspect that it isn’t your d/l that is at fault.

the latest is 12.1, available from here:

i am unaware of any general inability to fetch 12.1 and therefore
suggest your problem is local…

When using F5 it changes the Kernel options, listing avaliable entries (kernel default, safe settings, no acpi, no local acpi). I try them all, no success.

Sorry, i will do record a new media disc, in low speed, same as I do believe there is nothing wrong with the current disc data. Plus, at the past, i have successfully installed OpenSUSE 11 at the same machine, but now, its time to upgrades.

But now, i am worried by the time this issue is getting off: i really do thinking in change my distro option (i know Ubuntu works fine here).

Thanks for trying to help.

Sorry DenverD, but nothing is wrong with BIOS. Is there something wrong with this installer, just that.

All other systems works (or worked pretty fine at this machine - that is not very old or deprecated): Windows XP, Vista, Ubuntu 8, Ubuntu 10, OpenSUSE 11.

Thank you for help.

Best regards,

fwendt

I get the “12.2” number at the first time testing DVD disc, at a Windows OS: the installer points version number 12.2 to install

I know, current version downloaded image points 12.1, pretty fine.

Last try i will do by now it just that: get a new iso file, burn a dvd disc at low speed, and try again. If it works, i will repost the steps here, else, i will jump to other distro.

Sorry, but spend almost a week night time trying to install a Linux is a thing i appreciate ten years past, at academic time. Today, things changed.

Best regards dth2.

do not install from inside windows…boot the disk and install.

Yes, that’s what I have done since the beggining. Therefore, as i could not install it, i booted at Windows to browse disc data, and so, the “Windows installer” appears, pointing v12.2.

Thanks.

I wonder if you have somehow downloaded the development version - it
may be flipped to 12.2 now.

I would double check that you did not download the development version
and make sure you compare the MD5 against a known 12.1 MD5, just to be
sure.

Otherwise, let us know exactly where you went to download the ISO.
