Apologies if these bugs have been reported before or if I’m reporting them in the wrong place, but I clearly failed the intelligence test of knowing the correct place to post them.
GRUB2: TTY consoles are often the wrong resolution and ignores any attempt to change the resolution [workaround - legacy GRUB works perfectly well].
NVIDIA drivers: after installing the drivers (the repository way - on two different computers), the computer does not power off after shut down (whether from KDE or shutdown -hP now) after xxxx: System Halted! [workaround - in boot specification change acpi=off to acpi=oldboot].
I hope that you have looked around a bit here and at least read the Terms & Conditions before you registered yourself.
That should have told you that these forums are from openSUSE users to openSUSE users. You will thus understand that it is of no use to file a bug report with your fellow openSUSE users.
What may help you when you have a poblem, is asking here if anybody can help you solving it. During that process a general feeling may raise that there is not just a user problem, but a real bug. And then, one of the contributers in that thread (maybe the initiator) will have a lot of information to file a real bug with all bells and whistles at openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE
Reading through the minimal information about those two problems you provide I have the following advices:
a) I have the idea that I read those two problems earlier, thus you could use the search function here and see if you can find an adeqaute answer.
b) when you find nothing, or not enough, start a thread here, but only one problem per thread, else two (or even more) discussion might intermongle into a real mess. And give that thread a good title that will draw the attention of people knowing about your subject. And put there real information, not a general remark, because when the general; remark as you do above would be true, these forums would overflow with thread about it., which is not the case.
c) the result of such a thread could be a bug filed with general consent, but in most of the cases where people here start boldly with “I file a bug”, lead in the end to a nice solution.
I’m very sorry. From your link under Submitting bug reports', non-technical users’ are directed to this forum. I did not realise there was any endeavour to distinguish between a user problem' and real bug’ since this is a matter of perspective.
Thank you very much for the detailed advice. I will certainly take it on board. My only concern however is the number of hoops you are inviting users to negotiate before submitting a user problem/bug report. I encountered the two issues and found obvious workarounds. A preliminary search through the forum yielded nothing, so I thought I’d share this information. But I concede that my search my not have been sufficiently exhaustive and if the post is indeed redundant, I am happy for you to delete the thread.
The difference between “user problem” and “bug” may be vague now and then. But a user problem is often caused by misunderstanding the docs (or not reading them at all ), errors made by users without knowing, etc. When one still thinks that something was initiated by what can be considered a bug, one can freely file one (the Bugzilla is open for everybody). But often unexperienced users try to file bugs, not even delivering the slightest information. Like they do on the forums, look at a few threads here where people do not even start to tell which version of openSUSE they use :(. But we are here to get that corrected OOn Bugzilla that will simply be ignored as insufficient documented. IMHO it is beter to discuss here where it is wrong and where the bug realy is, what information should go with it, etc. The developers will not spend much time on badly reported bugs. And that is correct, they have more to do. Also a bug that has support from the community will get that support in Bugzilla with e.g. votes for it and additional evidence.
And about your problems, your by-passes are no real solutions. I invite you to start threads on each one of them to see if our community can say anything usefull about them.
In any case, welcome again and when you have other questions or problems, feel free to ask.
Thanks for the warning, and a reminder that legacy GRUB may be the way to go here too. Before installing/upgrading to 12.2, I have booted the KDE liveCD with no issues really, having tested many of the included apps. In fact that’s been my best experience to date with one of those. However, that doesn’t really test the installation of 12.2 into a multiboot situation based entirely on legacy GRUB. Glad to hear of a successful workaround in advance of any impeding difficulties.
Of course I searched the forum for GRUB2 stuff, but most seems to have been either pre-release issues or theoretical. I started reading official openSUSE documentation updated for GRUB2… Hope it’s not as tedious as it sounds.
Hmmm I see the requirement for proper bug description, but I believe there’s a need for a balance. Users are not compelled to report bugs, they are under no obligation to persist using a specific distro, and the users are performing a favour for the developers every time they voluntarily submit what they consider a bug (even if it turns out to be user-negligence). Consequently it would not be unreasonable to suggest that the balance should be in favour of conveniencing the users rather than the developers in bug reporting :).
I called them workarounds' rather than solutions’ ;). Of course I’m happy to resubmit or for the post to be split and redirected towards whichever subforum(s) you suggest. However, your first post on this thread suggests that the problems I have described are not new to the forum and therefore I would suggest deleting the thread.
Pleasure! I am hopeful however that GRUB2 can be fixed because my understanding is that GRUB Legacy is currently not under development. I can also add that during installation, the openSUSE’s specification of GRUB Legancy works
perfectly (as before ). I believe it is a wonderful benefit that openSUSE gives maximum freedom to the user choice (e.g. KDE vs GNOME or GRUB vs GRUB2) but the default settings (i.e. GRUB2) should really be bullet proof, and this is
not the case for GRUB2.
I wouldn’t hold your breath!
Thank you. However according to your suggested link (openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE), Bugzilla reporting is for developers and experienced users. While I must confess to having used SUSE (then
SuSE 6.0) since 1999, I still do not regard myself as an experienced user (I haven’t grown the beard). I’m sorry if my responses to your posts come across as acerbic, but as an moderator/administrator of several forums myself, I was
somewhat surprised by the apparent scepticism following my initial post.
You titled this thread “bug report”, which got people looking at it as a bug report and telling you that this was the wrong place.
It would have been better if you had started two threads, one with a title such as “grub2 resolution problem” and the other with a title something like “Nvidia drivers and shutdown problem”.
If you had done that, different people would have looked at the threads. Perhaps they would have simple advice that would help correct your problem. Or perhaps they would have agreed that it was a bug, and recommended a bug report at the bugzilla. Either way, you would have been offered a bit more help.
