openSUSE 12.2: Blank DVD-R does not show

Inserted blank DVD-R in drive - to burn a manual onto - but it does not show in Dolphin or, at the prompt, in /media. However, other DVDs or CDs come up normally, and the same blank DVD-R comes up normally in Windows 7 - same laptop, same DVD drive. (which is not to say I will go back to Windows, I will not!)

Any idea what might cause this?

“Blank” DVD’s are not mounted. If you start k3b, create a data DVD project, you should find the blank media as a selectable option for your project, but otherwise it will not show up. Are you still using openSUSE 12.2 as you say?

Thank you. Yes, I am still using 12.2 Would it be worthwhile to upgrade to a more recent version? How much would be involved, would I have to redo all my individual settings and adjustments, as well as reinstall everything I added after I installed 12.2?

So, using openSUSE 12.2 means you can do an upgrade to openSUSE 12.3 if you want. Find upgrade instruction here: SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE

Upgrades must be limited to one version. That means you do not “upgrade” to version 13.1, soon to be released, from openSUSE 12.2, which you use. As always, a clean install works from any version. You always have the option on a clean install to reuse your /home area by NOT formatting it. You must redo all system settings, but all personnel settings are maintained. You normally need to use custom partitioning to reuse existing partitions so ask for help if you need it.

Using the offline method you can upgrade two versions. It is apparently
supported.
