openSUSE 12.2 Beta1 Install Questions

Yesterday I replaced a bad disc then used the 12.2 Beta1 installation
DVD Build 398. The first attempted failed miserably when grub refused to
boot correctly. I reinstalled and disable images and allowed it to
install grub2. All went well. Booted first time and it also found my
12.1 installation on separate disk.

Today I went to kmail and set up my email account exactly like the on
12.1 kmail 4.8.3. (Note: 12.2 is 4.8.0 have not updated anything yet).
kmail 4.8.0 receives mail fine but send mail does not work. (same is
true with a 32 bit install of 12.2 on another older system). Error is
transport failed, authentication error. Has anyone seen this type of
problem?

My mail is POP3 for receive and SMTP for sending. (Both work correctly
on 12.1 with KDE 4.8.3).

Also is there any document on how to change the default boot on Grub 2.
Easy on Grub, just modify menu.lst. Do I need to do it with the boot
loader under YaST?

Will be testing more and adding to this. Will report mail problem as bug
if update to 4.8.3 does not fix it.

The kmail error is to do with the cyrus packages (I had a similiar problem with m4 but not beta - which works for me). As a temporary work round would suggest that you install the cyrus packages from 12.1 and see if kmail then works.

Thanks! I will look into it today. Do you know if SeaMonkey uses the
Cyprus Package since it sends mail under 12.2 just fine.

I have the same problem-grub2 failed to install. I triеd 3 times!

In order for the installation to run you MUST “disable the images”.
Grub2 will then be operable.

FYI
You can change from Grub2 to Grub1 or vice-versa via the Yast Boot Loader.

On one system, grub2 installed. On another, it failed and I had to revert to grub1.

That’s Beta 1. However, I was looking forward to a better Beta 1.
However, due to the hardware crashing. It affected the performance of Build.

It was great to hear that “coolo” was able to fix the problem. Beta 2 should turn out to be a better build.

The next one will be 12.2-RC1, not Beta2.

Whenever installing a pre-release version, you should always check out the “most
annoying bugs” wiki page. for 12.2, it is at

http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Most_annoying_bugs_12.2_dev

By observing the workarounds that are posted, you will save yourself some trouble.

I reinstalled with Images disabled and grub2 installed and worked. Today
after search internet I found how to change my default boot to 12.1.
Will do later on.

My mail problem still exists, when I try to install the cypus packages
from 12.1 repo, YaSt dies with error. Will try to figure out zypper
comand and try that. Cannot remember exact words of message but an inter
search of message said to down grade cypus also. Will try zypper.

is grub2 in final version going to be easier to change boot order. I
notice bootloader under YaSt also does not have option to set boot
order.

Thanks for all the help so far.

It would be to openSUSE’s benefit that their release date be pushed back 2 weeks to make up for lost time.
Since we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of openSUSE we should encourage this release be more stable than the 12.1 installation.

Improved graphics – hardware support – faster Yast including faster application start up.

From what I have seen, 12.2 is mostly pretty good.

The big problems:

Installation woes. There are a number of posts on those problems.
Plymouth boot splash problems.
Yast takes segfaults.

Of those, hopefully they will have the installation faults fixed by rc1. The plymouth maintainer seems to be saying that the problems with that are fixed in factory, so should show up in rc1. The Yast problems are apparently related to the new gcc version, and the factory mailing list indicates that the backup plan is to revert to an earlier gcc, if neccesary.

A two week delay would not bother me. Or just keeping the original schedule would also be fine.

The image problem is being fixed and the Plymouth issue animated screen with bubbles and progress bar freezes when it reaches 50 percent.
However, as you know Factory is always in flux. I do not want a repeat of 12.1’s graphics freezing up during the installation and see policykit issues resolved. Remember Linus’s rant?

For Yast. I would rather see a stable version with the previous gcc release versus the unstable one. Yes?

I’m much more confident about the 12.2 release versus the previous one. There’s even a new “buntu-like” software manager in the works? But it won’t be available for awhile.

On my machines it has been both pretty good and pretty diabolical. M3
was fine on this machine but unusable on my spare due to only VGA
graphics being available. On Beta install on the spare, the graphics
were fixed, more or less, but Yast was a problem.

Now I’ve made the mistake of updating the spare from factory and
graphics have retrogressed and ethernet connection has been lost.
Actually, the ethernet connection was added again but not configured
because there was no connection - allegedly. The wireless connection
was removed for good measure. Although I apparently had one
successfully-configured ethernet connection, I actually have no outside
links. Switched to Windoze 7 to ensure connections were really OK and
everything seemed fine but, halfway through watching a TV show on it, it
decided to log me off to install some software. A reminder, if I needed
it, as to why I use Linux.

I’ve now got an aching throat and a runny nose so I’m not sure whether
I can be bothered to do much more for a day or two. In the words of the
old song - “life gets tedious, don’t it.”

I have some beefs with Windows 7. I have problems installing addons for Firefox and downloading an executable for SpeedTest.
The OS always tells me that I do not have enough permissions. Or Firefox cannot modify the downloaded file.

It’s way too restrictive.

BTW File a bug report with Bugzilla about the ethernet connection. Factory is always in flux. What is not working one day is working on another.

Installed build 419 from NET and graphics, sound, ethernet OK. Tried
my usual removal of Packagekit and Yast crashed. First NET install for
a while that’s run smoothly.

Right now the NET installs are probably the best bet. The openSUSE 12.2 RC1 will NOT be release this Thursday, June 14th.
It looks like the whole release of 12.2 may be pushed back to Sept/October 2012.

This is after checking the Status: RC1 Factory mail list.

Just my 3 cents:

I agree with delaying 12.2. Its a mess, my main issues are with YaST and
KDE 4.8.4??? I spent 40 plus years in the computer field (Field
Engineering) and have seen what keep up with a schedule just because the
schedule says it will be done on that date.

One good thing is Grub2 worked for me.

I’m looking forward to Grub2 as soon as they add the “kcm-grub” KDE Control Module
It will allow you to adjust the color, background and I think the font.

Once it’s installed it should appear in the “Configure Desktop” settings.

That sound good. Only unanswered question I have is how to set init 3,
on boot. I found a file I need to modify if I want to change the default
boot system. But nothing on doing an init 3 on start (For installing
Nvidia driver hardway).

Thanks for your reply.

Simply type a 3 on the boot prompt line when starting the machine.
