openSUSE 12.1 Windows domain 2008 login as domain\username, way to configure just username?

Running openSUSE 12.1 in a Windows 2008 active directory domain. I am able to join the openSUSE server to the domain, and log into the domain as well. However, the login name needs to be entered as domain\username. I realize that this is by default according to the openSUSE documentation at Chapter

However, I have been tasked with finding out if there is a way to have users log into AD with only their username, without having local accounts set up on the openSUSE server. Is this possible? If so, any assistance would be appreciated.

FYI, we only login using the shell (putty or directly on the console, no GUI installed).

I just set this up for one of my machines. Here’s the guide I used Samba & Active Directory - SambaWiki

Specifically, I think the setting:
winbind use default domain = yes
in /etc/samba/smb.conf was what allowed me to login without specifying my domain.

Thanks Beef!!! That did the trick.
