openSUSE 12.1 will have kernel 3.1

Copied from a message by Andreas Jaeger earlier today:

Jeff just submitted Kernel 3.1-rc5 to Factory and I followed with the submission of the kernel headers of 3.1-rc5 (package linux-glibc-devel).
So, openSUSE 12.1 will get kernel 3.1.

for those, who’re wondering

The Linux Kernel Archives shows 3.1rc4git 2 as the last kernel snapshot. Has the security breach changed things?

Ok I see kernel 3.1rc5 in Vanilla Installing that for a preview

Not that I know. Linus released 3.1-rc5 a couple of days ago and, as he keeps
the “official” kernel source database on his machine, there was no chance of
corrupting the kernel source. The various ML’s had a lot of discussion on why a
distributed version control system like git makes it much easier to detect if
some intruder had tried to change the source. I’m convinced that no one has
managed to install a back door into the Linux kernel.

What is impeding kernel development is that master.kernel.org, aka
hera.kernel.org, which suffered a security breach that seemed to be reversed
fairly easily. Soon thereafter, a file-system corruption in jfs volumes was
discovered, and it was taken down again. I have not heard if that data problem
was due to software, hardware, or intruder problems.

Understood
I am now running 3.1rc5 vanilla and boot time is even faster than rc4 network is ok desktop effects is fast and snappy sound and streaming is good

Now that kernel3.1rc5 is in factory can we change the title of this thread to
openSUSE 12.1 Now Has kernel 3.1:wink:

Running 3.1rc5 vanilla (from Kernel/vanilla) along with 3.1rc4-4.4 (from Kernel/HEAD). -rc5 is indeed fast, snappy and noticeably quick. Currently tracking a non-repeating problem with suspend (aka “sleep” aka “suspend to RAM”). -rc4 does not manifest the problem. After return from suspend, the workspaces are unresponsive: mouse/touchpad responsive, keyboard non-responsive. No messages found in logs, and drop to RL3 and return may restore sessions.

That is the only problem found, and it occurs only on my Intel HD graphics (the Arrandale/Ironlake). From the (already reported) messages concerning errors setting PCH, there is noticeable efforts here. I have not noticed the problem on ATI graphics box yet.

I ran into that problem once but I only ran the vanilla kernel for an evening and switched back to Index of /factory/repo/oss because it has the 3.1rc5 kernel and after suspending to ram a fw times I have had a good restart every time

Installed 3.1.0-rc5-2-desktop from the Factory oss repo, and suspend is almost back to its status in 3.0. The hang is gone, but, on occasion, either a lid close or workspace switch is required. This represents a positive regression (there is an oxymoron) to behavior found at kernel 2.6.38-rc2, which correctly managed the Arrandale/Ironlake graphics and display.

For openSUSE non-12.1 users (i.e.: 11.3, 11.4, et al):

If one uses the factory oss repo to install kernel 3.1.0-rc5-2 (or any other kernel), one should disable or remove this repo following kernel installation. Addition of the repo will attempt to install several packages that may not be desireable. (I prevented ~ 11 packages). Reading of Upgraded to OpenSuse 12.1 is also strongly suggested.

While significant benefits may be realized with installation of the 3.1 -rc5 kernel, the risks of inclusion of the factory repo may pose a significant risk.
