Not a good review for openSuse 12.1. Developers take notice to the gripes!!. If this was Windows or MacOSX, this would have never been released. And we don’t want to hear about licensing
BS!!. Especially in regards to official Nvidia drivers or codecs. Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Arch, etcc doesn’t have these issues, with delivering the goods!.
I have had no trouble booting from USB. I’m wondering where the reviewer screwed up. Sure, some older hardware does not have the BIOS support for a USB boot, but the review claims to be based on modern hardware.
The reviewer does not like the default wallpaper. That’s hardly a complaint, given that the wallpaper can be changed (as the reviewer acknowledges).
Oh dear! The reviewer was booting from the live CD, and hadn’t even installed to give it a fair chance. Sure, the desktop search does not work on the live CD, because the CD is read-only, and search databases need to be written somewhere.
This seems to be mainly a problem with his existing settings that the reviewer retained in an upgrade.
That was not my experience. Sure, 12.1 is not perfect. But 11.4 was not perfect back last March when it was first released.
It’s fine to point out problems. But the cited reviewer seems to have done a rather poor job, so I would not trust that review.
12.1 is working great!! Dedomiendo? I believe gave 12.1 a great review. Also I am using kde come from a long line of gnome users here and kde is fantastic. Although I like gnome and unlike many former gnome users feel gnome is heading in the right direction it has a real show stopper for me in that the wireless drops a lot of the time. This has been going on for over 6 months now and it is not worked out yet? Yes it is gnome specific as on the same hardware kde stays on.
Anyway my screen looks sharp and the developers of openSuse have done a terrific work and job. Thanks again to all you out there!!!
It would have been better if you would have moved to a place like Genera; CXhtchat. It is now in the forum where people can ask questions about the functioning of the forums (and forums software) itself. Not at all about openSUSE!!!
NNTP users take care. I am going to move anew to Chjtchat!
It was wasted time to click the link to the review and wasted time to
read it. This is so uninformative and sloppy, no deeper look by the
reviewer into anything.

personally, i think it should have been written to /dev/null…
i mean, everyone has a right to express an opinon but it is not
necessary (imnsho) for us to be overly nice to someone who knows so
little about this place that they can’t figure out where to post!
or already know that the line “Developers take notice to the gripes!!”
is so misguided and misdirected as to be laughable…

Mm… i can not waste my time since i don’t got the link. Anything wrong
with the nntp?
Now i have to visit the website.
Btw. i find the c’t review mostly good and accurate. Blogger opinions
are just that, opinions.

Now i read it. Strange i never encountered any of these problems. Maybe
it was installed on a laptop.

ct is a professional magazine a big difference.
I have nothing against bloggers, some blogs have a really high quality
and useful information.
The point is not that the blogger is critical about openSUSE (it is good
if someone nails down the problems in an accurate way) the problem is
the quality (who on earth is interested in the question if the default
wallpaper looks good or not for example or that some installations fail
when using a live cd instead of a real install).
I had also to switch to the web forum to see the link - the thread was
moved.

Well that is true. To me c’t is the creme of magazine writing and since
a lot of the authors have some form of degree it does get deeper and
fairer into the subject (and more technical).
Bloggers, especially from people like me, tend to be less fair in the
critique. If a professional writes an article in a blog, it can be
still of value. But the problem with a lot of blogs is, that they are
just opinion and not researched and verifiable.
The wallpaper was indeed something of a personal view and overall most
issues i did not encounter myself. Was it the final release he tested
or a release candidate? Gee, now i have to read it again.
Anyway, i am very critical of blogs and so should everyone.

Interesting that earlier Dedoimedo had favourably reviewed OpenSUSE 11.4, then had problems with 12.1. We should assume it was an honest review and take the points as issues to be resolved, not deride them as uninformed. I think the release of 12.1 may have been rushed, certainly ‘snapper’ the much anticipated backup tool was not ready, or properly documented at the time of release. The installer that attracted criticism could be improved, the messages and hints put up when one tries to install btrfs could be much more informative, and the partitioning part of the installer really needs a makeover. At this time we have several competing implementations of Gnome 3 to compare, from Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora and from OpenSUSE. At the moment I’m sticking with OS but nothing prevents me moving if I hit problems. The only issues I’ve had so far are the poor rendering of fonts (fixed following recommendations on this forum) and the Gnome3 extensions/themeing tasks - this is a common problem with G3 and no doubt will be fixed when some better tools to manage the extensions and themes become available.
The review is right that it’s best to stick with 11.4 for the moment though. And I wish there were comments possible on the Dedoimedo site!
Issues to be resolved? What? Like the wallpaper color?
Take my current situation at the moment. I am unable to successfully boot from a 12.1 dvd. At this point I haven’t tested this to see if this is true for other distros or just openSUSE 12.1, so I am not willing to blame openSUSE yet until I elimate issues with the laptop. I have upgraded to 12.1 via zypper and all is fine.
I did read the review, and I tend to agree with the rest of the posters here. The reviewer did not seem to be knowledgable about things, which caused some of his issues, and the others were preferences. Like he mentioned nepomuk (however that is spelled), the notification yelling at him. He actually used the word “yelling”. He can turn this notification off, which he didn’t mention. So I don’t credit this reveiw as worth much. There are a lot better reveiws out there that this one.
He’s also tried the 32-bit version and had even more problems – and wrote about them.
Keep in mind this guy is NOT a linux noob, he’s actually been using OpenSUSE 11.4 (and older) and knows how to install the operating system. He wrote praises about 11.4 as one of the best Linux releases ever, and had high hopes for 12.1 (as did I). I tend to find that he’s spot on with his reviews – which interestingly enough, seem to be about how the operating system works with his hardware, and nothing more. I’ve also experienced a lot of the same issues he’s had, though they seem to be more KDE centric and hence I attribute the problems to KDE and not to openSUSE. I’ve even installed Fedora 16 KDE in a VM and I have almost exactly the same crashes and what not …
I did notice his remarks about 11.4 and could have come to the same conclusion but since the reveiw was like it is, I can not. You have noticed the issues to be KDE centric, so that would seem to be an upstream bug at best. I’d suggest checking bugzilla for openSUSE and KDE.
And do not forget we are all human and not always fair and this review
is just a personal blog and the reviewer might have had a bad day or was
frustrated because 11.4 was so good from his POV and 12.1 so crappy from
his POV compared to 11.4 so that nothing was right including the color
of the wallpaper and nothing deeper is behind it.
Honestly I simply do not care much about such reviews they are to often
personal taste. The only way to get a real impression is first hand
experience by trying it.

Obviously the review has hit a raw nerve here! Maybe his experience is representative of a new user’s experience, not of someone who knows all the wrinkles of the OS. An honest read without blinkers may help.
